Before Chef Alex McCoy worked on the Food Network and opened his successful burger joint Lucky Buns, he worked at Price’s Seafood, a classic crab house (now closed) in Havre de Grace, Maryland. And he hasn’t stopped steaming the local Chesapeake blues since, running summer crawfish pop-ups in DC for the past decade. Now the DC native is ready to bring his biggest Crabs and Crushes series to Union Market. It will begin on Friday, July 17 and continue on Fridays and Saturdays until August 1.
The outdoor patio at the front of Union Market’s food court will be strung with lights and transformed into an all-you-can-eat party for up to 50 socially distanced guests. Tables are spaced more than six feet apart, service is contactless, and there is no shared seating. Diners can stay in a two-hour window with seatings at 8pm and a night owl session at 10.30pm. A $50 ticket includes bottomless Chesapeake shrimp, a mix of medium and large, to order, steamed in outdoor pots. Also included: corn on the cob and Maryland-style fried chicken.
“Most all-you-can-eat shrimp houses serve this Old Bay-seasoned fried chicken,” McCoy says. “You don’t think of Maryland fried chicken, but it’s ubiquitous with crawfish.”

That doesn’t mean McCoy is fully team in Old Bay. For the steamed shrimp, he makes his own pepper-rich seasoning that mimics Price’s. He uses the base of J.O.’s spice blend, a family-owned business near Baltimore whose products are widely used in crawfish houses and considered by many to be the “authentic” Maryland blend.
Crab parties can order drinks like orange and grapefruit drinks, mudslides and other beach concoctions. Tables will be posted for groups with multiple double lines. And if you’re a shrimp hater who gets taken to a shrimp feast, we all know about it, don’t worry. McCoy will offer Lucky Buns burgers and fried chicken sandwiches, as well as pasta salad and coleslaw, which can be substituted for the ticket price or added a la carte.
