While I’ve heard of people using a dozen or so crab baits around Annapolis, I’ve narrowed it down to just 4, and my first choice is the clear winner, and I use them 75% of the time. Chicken neck – the best blue crab crab bait

Chicken Neck is by far the most popular crab bait in Annapolis and around the world. They’re easy to use, whether you’re tying them to a line to float below your dock, or preparing a 1000-foot trot line to beat the sunrise.

It is very simple to catch crabs with chicken necks. For simplicity’s sake, let’s assume you’re pier crabbing.

Tie a ball of rope around the chicken’s neck, then find a 2×4 along the pier, there isn’t much around the underwater area. Tie the twine and chicken necks and place them in the water. Next, wait for the thread to become tight and slowly (inch by inch) pull the thread toward you. Once you see a crab nibbling at the bait, it’s time to swoop in with your crabbing net. shrimp

The next best bait for crabbing is shrimp. You can use live or dead shrimp as bait, but I’ve found dead shrimp to be just as effective and easier to store and use.

When catching shrimp like a chicken neck, you’ll want to use a simple rig. You can also use a crab trap, which we’ll discuss shortly.

For this attractant, just one application lasts all day. It’s simple and easy to use, but only comes in a 4 oz tube for quick application.

If you want an easier way to catch crabs, you might consider using a crab trap. A crab trap is a cage in which the bait is placed in the water and placed in the water. The crabs will enter the trap to get the bait, and then cannot escape.

While crab traps are easier to catch crabs, they also have some disadvantages. First, they are more expensive than just using chicken neck or shrimp. Second, check the traps often, or the crabs will run away.

Finally, the law limits the number of traps you can use. For example, in Maryland, each person is limited to 10 crab pots.
