Best Place To Eat Bbq In Kansas City – When it comes to Kansas City barbecue, everyone has an opinion. It’s a tough topic when their favorite barbecue restaurant is talking about a less than respectful tone. It is a theme that inspires war, all conflicts, and broken friendships. This is very important to the people of Kansas City.
So, when I decided to write a list of my favorite barbecue restaurants in Kansas City, I knew I was asking for trouble. However, Kansas City BBQ is the MOST American barbecue (in my opinion – and I’ve tried all kinds) and I knew this article was important to anyone wanting to enjoy one of the barbecue capitals of the United States. States. Even though I’ve moved to Kansas City, I hold Kansas City barbecue near and dear, and not just because it’s historically one of America’s staple foods. It is a food that encourages patience, care, and hard work. This dish calls for a group of friends and family—if you’re not sharing the grill with a large group, you’re doing it wrong.

So, with that preface, here’s a list of the best Kansas City Bbq in my humble barbecue-loving opinion.

Fiorella’s Jack Steak is another classic Kansas City barbecue restaurant that opened in 1957 as a traditional strip mall barbecue restaurant. This is without a doubt Kansas City’s fanciest and most traditional barbecue restaurant and a crowd favorite. While Jack’s Steak isn’t my first choice for barbecue (as seen on this list), it’s a great place for a date night or when you need to impress your parents or in-laws. It still has great barbecue and is an absolute staple in the Kansas City barbecue scene, as evidenced by a recent “Best Grilled Finish” award from FEAST magazine, a trusted local food magazine. I would recommend trying the cheesy corn casserole and the Kansas City Combo with the charred ends and ribs!
The slide opened just before Q39 at the Missouri/Kansas line in Kansas City, but the BBQ team started as a contest called “Scream Like a Pig.” Two brothers, Mike and Joe Pierce, created The Slap (short for the competition name) to bring BBQ to the Kansas City masses. Still an active contender on the Competiton BBQ circuit, Slap’s is one of Kansas City’s hidden treasures of barbeque, a small restaurant with only a few tables. Potato Goose, Cheesy Corn, Sweet Ribs, and Burnt Ends are just a few of the recommendations for this wall-to-wall BBQ joint that locals love.
Arthur Bryant’s was the first barbecue restaurant to open in Kansas City and has been called the best restaurant in the world (no big deal). Starting with the stand in 1908 and moving only three times (Arthur Bryant’s has been in its current location since 1958), Arthur Bryant created the famous burning tips that started the Kansas City tradition. At first, the charred ends were just the rotten edges of the brisket, which resembled bacon, but they turned into cubed, succulent, and still rotten edges. If you haven’t tried burnt ends, you haven’t tasted American barbecue! Arthur Bryant’s charred ends are tossed in a classic sauce (a very tomato and vinegar-based sauce, compared to other sweet barbecue sauces in Kansas City) and deep-fried.
Don’t forget to visit the historic site and see where the burnt ends came from. It’s one of the best experiences in Kansas City, especially as it’s been home to famous diners like Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Jack Nicholson, James Spader, and John. McCain, to name a few. Since Arthur Bryant has photos of all the famous people who have plastered their walls, you can find even more while you wait in line.

Hailed by Anthony Bourdain as one of the Thirteen Places You Must Eat Before You Die, Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue is loved by locals, visitors and the media alike. If you have enough time for a barbecue joint and you want to try what many food critics call the best barbecue in the country (and the world), this is the place to go. It’s all from the gas station.
Joe’s is famous for the Z-Man sandwich: sliced brisket, smoked provolone cheese, onion rings and Joe’s BBQ sauce on a Kaiser roll, and it’s amazing. It’s worth a try, and not just because it’s Jim Gaffigan’s favorite sandwich. French fries are also a favorite of mine because of their special French fry flavor. And thankfully, you can buy their barbecue sauce and french fry flavor, which is perfect for a souvenir. If you have time, and don’t mind waiting around the block for barbecue (I seriously died), this is the place to go. The only thing on the menu is smoked chicken. Nothing to write home about here. If you wasted your food on chicken, I’d cry for you (and the same for generations of Kansas City barbs).
Q39 is the best Kansas City bar. In fact, if I have friends or family in town and we have time for a restaurant, we take them out. . sick of it (even though i tried). The quality is also, at times, impressive for a restaurant with a 2-hour wait in the evenings. And I can’t get enough of the same thing every now and then: ribs. That should tell you how fantastic these ribs are.
Since opening in 2014, Q39 has become very popular with locals. Created by a barbecue champion and his wife, Q39 is covered in trophies, ribbons and certificates. With two locations in the Kansas City metro area, Q39 is known for their barbecue platters (with a choice of three or more meats), ribs, and everyone’s favorite Kansas City barbecue, charred ends. Burnt ends come in many different forms on this menu, including a burnt beet burger (an earthy burger topped with burnt ends), a burnt sandwich and a plate option. Try my favorite coleslaw, made with fresh green apples!
What To Eat In Kansas City (that Isn’t Bbq)
And finally, Char Bar is one of our favorite restaurant groups in the Kansas City area. Barbecue is great (like most in Kansas City), but Char Bar has an outdoor area with lawn games that makes it the perfect place to party.
Char Bar is also the only (if not the only) Kansas City barbecue restaurant to offer a vegetarian barbecue option.
Made with jack fruit, this unique addition to Char Bar’s menu is sure to delight vegetarian and vegan locals alike. With plenty of screens, Char Bar is always packed inside and out when the Chiefs or Royals are playing, and is great for kids who can’t sit in the restaurant. If you go with the crowd, try the Womp Platter (pictured) because it tastes like almost every meat Char Bar makes.
