I think the best strategy is to focus on enjoying your day at the zoo. In fact, that’s what we did for years until I figured out where I or the kids liked to eat.

However, keep an eye on some of these places. They are mentioned here because they fill a need, open early, or offer a popular breakfast.

The San Diego Zoo Sandwich Company is usually the only casual dining outlet open early in the morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Yes, this is before the zoo opens to the public, but, when it does, some tours They start at 8:30 in the morning. Right next door.

Here, you can find counter-order coffee, snacks, sandwiches, and salads. If you need the initial bracelet, check that it is open. One of the signature sandwiches is fried chicken on bread, but they also have standard deli sandwiches like Italian Torpedoes and Grilled Cheese or Kids Bread.

Hua Mei Cafe is open most of the time and is named after the first panda born outside the United States. Through joint work between Chinese and American scientists, Hu Mei was born in 1999 at the San Diego Zoo and the world watched him grow on PandaCam. I remember the red banners hanging with her name on her 100 day birthday (which is traditionally the day you name panda cubs) – I still have the documentary on VHS.

Hua Mei was moved to the Wulong Panda Reserve in 2004, which we visited before the Chengdu earthquake. The giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo all went back to China, but the McCafe lives on and the kids love to eat here. It’s mostly American-Chinese food but you can order a burger. By far the most popular dish is orange chicken.

There is a soft serve ice cream place called Who Me Cones right here. I personally think it has some of the best soft serve in town but if you want to go big, you can make it. Super sundaes might include hot chocolate chips, caramel sauce and whipped cream, for example.

Tip: Red pandas still live in the Lost Forest and they are cute. There is also a panda-centric gift shop next to Hua Mei Cafe.

One thing this new eatery offers is a slightly different take on family meals, including a pizza feast, a bucket of corn dogs, and a bucket of hot dogs. You can also find fruit salad and a tasty vegan burger, but the focus is clearly on the Hebrew national gourmet hot dogs.

This is where good things await. If you need a quick pick-me-up during your visit to the zoo, the kettle corn found here in a variety of flavors is a guest hit. You can also order beer, ice, or local draft beer.

It’s on the way to the Children’s Zoo (which is still under construction) and the SkyFore Aerial Tram near the Reptile House, so maybe avert the eyes of the youngsters if you’re not up for sugar cravings for them.

Yes, you can bring outside food into the San Diego Zoo. Large coolers are not allowed but you may bring your own small coolers, snacks and items to eat.

Basically, if you can carry it on your person (or stroller), it’s fine. If you have dietary restrictions, consider bringing your own food (more on that below).

Leave the glasses, wine and straws at home. Straws in zoos are not great for animal safety reasons, which is why you need to be extra careful to avoid spilling and other debris. If you’re visiting the San Diego Zoo with kids who need straws, sippy cups and water bottles with lids are fine. I cover this and more in my San Diego Zoo tip post.

However, one of the reasons you are allowed to bring your own food to the San Diego Zoo is because as a non-profit, they do not have the ability to customize dishes according to dietary restrictions at the time of ordering.

Albert’s Restaurant menu items are marked vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. If you have a food allergy, they ask that you alert your server, as here they can do it in moderation.
