East Coast Crab Homes Worth Visiting If you grew up in Maryland, Virginia, or D.C., eating steamed crab is a summer tradition. Here are some Eastern Shore restaurants and crab coops to add to your list of places to try. You don’t need a bay house or a car to delve into a delicious Chesapeake crab delicacy. In addition to DC area crab houses, there are seafood markets and delivery services that sell live and steamed crabs for backyard parties.
4958 Bethesda Ave., Bethesda Bethesdans have cracked crabs here since 1961. Casual indoor and outdoor seafood huts offer a variety of sizes (usually down to jumb0) and offer all-you-can-eat corn and medium-sized crab. Slow (market price). Top off your meal with fried oysters and key lime pie.
10195 Fairfax Blvd., Fairfax It’s not hard to find a table at Fairfax’s sprawling seafood spot, which steams crab year-round. Male and female crustaceans can be ordered by the dozen or in all-you-can-eat sets for $48.
Captain White’s Seafood City (oxon Hill)
The latest addition to the crab scene is this his 50-seat outdoor ‘Shack’ on U Street (opening Friday, August 19). We offer a menu of a dozen to half a dozen steamed blue crabs, plus seafood snacks, delightful side dishes, orange crush and other “dock drinks.” Crabs cannot be pre-booked, but picnic-style tables (up to 8 people) can be reserved at Resy.
With local branches in Woodley Park and Falls Church, the Louisiana-inspired chain serves blue crabs in season, along with Dungeness crabs, shrimp, lobster and, of course, crawfish. Diners can order their shellfish in a variety of seasonings and spice levels, including garlic butter and spicy Cajun. Both stores offer eat-in as well as take-out.
1200 N. Fort Meyer Dr., Arlington For over 30 years, Arlington’s long-established seafood restaurant has served steamed crab as well as a variety of ‘land and sea’ entrees. In the summer, local Chesapeake blues are brought in and served outside on the patio with a cold beer. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.
This Ivy City seafood restaurant serves piping hot steamed crabs that can be eaten indoors or on a spacious deck lit by a fire pit at night. Customers can choose from various sizes of local or Gulf crabs, or opt for an all-you-can-eat feast. We love to round out our meals with sides like the house-made smoked fish platter and mac and cheese.Note: The adjacent seafood market also sells live and steamed crab to-go.

This former staple of the Main Avenue Fish Market famously drifted away earlier this year, but now operates at a new location in Oxon Hill. As has been the case for over 50 years, Captain White’s offers live and steamed-to-order crab year-round in single and half-bushel increments (not always locally sourced, but available). from the bay). Shoppers can also pick up Chesapeake oysters for shelling, clams, shrimp, and more. All reservations are accepted in advance.
This large outdoor seafood market on The Wharf has been in operation since 1939. Our favorite way to order is to go in person. For crabs, check for ones that look lively. They often come in multiple sizes and are available in both males and females. Shoppers can eat it raw or order it cooked. Wharf’s garage parking is usually expensive, but if you park at Fish Market, his first hour is just $2 (verification of purchase required).
