I was excited to spend 3 days in Crescent City as it was one of my first trips since lockdowns began to ease and our devastating bushfires here in California are getting more and more under control each year.

I last visited Crescent City in 2014 when I used it on the Pacific Coast Highway. Like most PCH users, I stopped overnight in Crescent City; I arrived after dark and set off shortly after breakfast. So I’ve never seen Crescent City!

Now, despite all the chaos, disappointment, and heartache in 2020, I’ve decided to make a return trip. Spent a weekend at Crescent City exploring all the area has to offer and the best things to do in Crescent City.

This won’t come as a surprise to anyone who knows me, but I love it: Crescent City is the perfect blend of California chill and Pacific North Coast* aesthetic. I always like to go over a few logistics before diving into the gist of my post. Stay with me as these travel tips will help you answer many questions as you plan your Crescent City itinerary.

It’s not all Negative Nancy to start with, but if there’s one tricky thing about visiting Crescent City it’s how far it is. Crescent City is a six-hour drive from San Francisco and five hours from Portland.

This means Crescent City is a commitment to achieve; If you are planning to spend 3 days in Crescent City, you will need to take half a day off from work as you will either need to get there on Friday or come back on Monday. If you take any shorter than that, you will find that you don’t have enough time to enjoy all the things to do in Crescent City!

I worked with Toyota for my Crescent City trip; They loaned me a new Toyota C-HR to test on the Pacific Coast Highway and even try it out on some adventure (very kindly) off-road. Cruise control was a dream come true for long trips on US-101, and the “smart” headlights helped brighten our journey as we headed down the winding PCH and misty Highway 199 into the Redwoods.

Sorry if I don’t mention that you can also fly to Crescent City: Contour Air offers daily flights from Crescent City to Oakland. Flights depart CEC to OAK at 7:00 AM and return OAK to CEC at 6:00 PM (talk 19:15). This is a less budget-friendly but more time-friendly way to visit Crescent City (you’ll need to rent a car to get around too!).

As I mentioned above, Crescent City has a weather pattern that is more like the Pacific Northwest (Washington and Oregon) than the rest of California. As you can see above, we had a beautiful sunset and a soaking rain on the same day!

The best months to visit Crescent City are summer: average temperatures range from 42°F to 64°F throughout the year, but these rare 70°F days only occur between June and August (if that happens!).

Expect rain (and wind—this is the Pacific Coast, after all!) in winter. Precipitation peaks in December with an average of 10 inches for that month. Crescent City is also mostly cloudy between November and March. That doesn’t matter if you like that dreary PNW vibe like me, but if you want to enjoy the outdoor activities to do in Crescent City (recommend below!)

As you can imagine, when you prepare for a trip to Crescent City, you’ll do better and stay drier if you follow my luggage list in Seattle instead of my one in San Francisco.

As you start planning your Crescent City vacation, you may wonder: “What makes it more valuable than a night’s stay?” Well, buckle up – Crescent City has loads of lists of things to do, and you’ll soon find that even three days isn’t enough to enjoy it all.

While Crescent City takes its name from its crescent-shaped sandy beach just south of the city, its real appeal is actually inland: the gorgeous Redwoods you all know to love.

Crescent City is close to several protected Redwoods areas, including Jedidiah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. These three parks include the Redwoods National and State Parks, with others stretching south along the California Pacific Coast. And it’s minutes away if you’re visiting Crescent City.

To help you narrow down your search and planning, Stout Grove in Jed Smith Redwoods is a must-see. The visitor center in Hiouchi is also very cute and pandemic friendly.

Second after towering timbers when it comes to things to do in Crescent City are the beautiful, nude beaches of the North Shore. Anyone who has explored the Pacific Northwest will recognize the beaches in Crescent City:

Crescent Beach is a long stretch of beach surrounded by the Pacific Coast Highway and boasts stunning views of the ocean. It’s very similar to Long Beach in Washington or Seaside in Oregon.

Pebble Beach is more traditional for this far up the coast: its eponymous landscape is more for sunbathing than surfing, and piles of sea dot the landscape.

The Tolowa Dunes also encircle a strip of sand north of Crescent City, where you’ll escape all but the most adventurous beach hunters, hikers, and horseback riders (more on that below!).

Trivia for you: Did you know that the Smith River is the longest impermeable river in California? (I bet you didn’t, as I’ve never done before while standing in it!)

The Smith River flows uninterrupted from spring waters in the Pacific Rim Range to the Pacific Ocean with man-made structures, and motorboats are not permitted on the river. It winds through stone canyons and Redwood trunks and is perfect for an afternoon of rafting, tubing or kayaking.
