You’ll find everything from hipster bars to big clubs here. It is also a very safe area, so you can feel comfortable walking around at night. Go to the Paseo de la Reforma, which is the main street that runs through the neighborhood, and choose a bar that suits your mood.

One of my favorite things to do in Mexico City at night is visit La Roma Brewing; a microbrewery in Roma Norte that offers a great range of different craft beers, many of which are brewed locally.

If you’re looking for somewhere with a more alternative scene, La Roma is definitely the place to be. It also has good public transport links to the rest of the city, so it’s convenient to travel from here.

If you are traveling with children then Polanco is a great place to base yourself. It’s very safe, and there are plenty of parks and playgrounds where your kids can let off some steam.

You will also be within easy walking distance of Bosque de Chapultepec – one of the largest urban parks in the Americas.

Polanco is also pretty quiet at night, so you won’t have to worry about late night bars and loud revelers keeping your little ones up at night.

Besides being family friendly, Polanco is the best neighborhood in Mexico City for people who like a little glitz, glamor and exclusivity.

However, the main downside to staying here, (besides the lack of nightlife), is that it can be quite expensive, and budget options are somewhat limited.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly place to stay in Mexico City, Santa María La Ribera is a great choice.

It’s not the most exciting neighborhood in the city, but it’s fairly central and there are plenty of cheap accommodation options to choose from.

Santa María La Ribera has great authentic Mexican restaurants and eateries. Many of these are very cheap, so it’s entirely possible to eat out without eating too much of your budget. Try La Chileria CDMX for delicious tacos and salads.

In general, you probably won’t see too many expats or foreign tourists in this part of town. I really like this, and it definitely helps keep the prices down.

One thing to keep in mind is that Santa María can be quite noisy and busy, especially during rush hour. But as long as this doesn’t bother you, it’s a great place to base yourself if you’re looking to experience Mexico City without spending too much money.

The colorful neighborhood of Coyoacán is probably best known for being home to La Casa Azul, (the Blue House), where Frida Kahlo lived and spent most of her life.

However, the area also has a wide variety of interesting shops and markets, making this the best area in Mexico City to stay if you’re interested in shopping – especially if you’re looking for something handmade.

There are a few different markets here where you can find great bargains on souvenirs, clothing, ceramics and other Mexican handicrafts. The Mercado Artesanal Mexicano is definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for something unique to take home with you.

There are also some great independent shops in Coyoacán, selling everything from clothes and jewelry, to furniture and home decor. Walk through the streets around the Jardín Hidalgo park and you will find many of these.

The Centro Histórico, (ie Historical Center), is the best place to stay in Mexico City if you are interested in history. Plus, many of the best things to see and do in Mexico City can be found here.

The area around the Zócalo – the city’s main public square – is particularly worth exploring, as it is home to many of Mexico City’s most important historic buildings. These include the Palacio Nacional, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Templo Mayor.

The Templo Mayor was the main temple of Tenochtitlan – the capital of the Mexica (or “Aztec”) people. After conquering the city, Hernán Cortés and the Spanish conquistadors flattened parts of it and built an enormous cathedral, (the Metropolitan Cathedral), on top of the ruins.

Today, parts of the ancient city, including the Templo Mayor, have been excavated, and you can see them lying right next to the cathedral.

To learn more about this fascinating and turbulent history, I recommend visiting the Museum of the Mayor of the Temple. This showcases some important archeological finds and does a great job of making the history of Mexico accessible to everyone.

The Centro Histórico is the best area to stay in Mexico City for tourists who want to do a lot of sightseeing.

This district is home to many of Mexico City’s most famous and visited landmarks. These include the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Zócalo, the Palacio Nacional, the Templo Mayor, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

Certain areas in Mexico City experience high levels of crime and should therefore be avoided, especially at night. These include the following districts: Iztapalapa, Tepito, Doctores and Ciudad Neza.

The area around Piazza Garibaldi, (which is one of the best places to see an authentic Mariachi performance), is generally good during the day, but should be avoided after dark. I would suggest staying elsewhere because of this.

All the districts recommended in this post – La Condesa, Roma, Polanco, Reforma, Santa Maria La Ribera, Coyoacán, and the Centro Histórico – are safe to stay. Just remember to watch out for pickpockets in Centro Histórico.
