A trip to the nation’s capital just doesn’t seem complete without a visit to the White House. With its famous address at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the White House is the primary living and working space for the President of the United States.
We can all stand outside the property gates and marvel at the world’s most famous home, but getting inside is a little trickier. Security here is tight for obvious reasons! If you want to actually go inside and tour the White House, you must submit a tour request through your member of Congress.
Not from the US? No problem! Simply contact your country’s embassy in Washington, D.C. for assistance in submitting your travel request. It really is one of the best places in Washington, D.C.
All requests must now be made in advance. Don’t expect to rock up and just be let in!

A great starting point for some of the city’s most famous museums and monuments, the National Mall.
The Mall itself is a long strip of grassy parkland and pond area that stretches from the Capitol Building on the east to the Lincoln Memorial on the west.
Take a stroll down the Mall, which is especially great on a sunny day and is one of the best places in Washington to walk.
The Capitol Building, home to the US Legislature, is full of lawmakers and politicians who help decide what happens in the country, and it’s a building that we visitors can still visit and visit.

To take tours of the Capitol, you can contact your state senator or representative (if you live in the US) who will issue you a pass that will allow you to enter the building.
Alternatively, if you are visiting from another country, you can buy tickets for an official tour directly outside. I loved the area and it’s one of the best places in Washington that is so iconic. You can’t miss it.
While wandering around this wonderful city, don’t forget to enjoy its delicious food, such as Good Stuff Eatery, where you can eat some of the tastiest burgers and creamy cocktails in town.
For something special, head to Robert Wiedmaier’s Marcel’s, where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the incredible tasting menu.

With 18 world-class institutions in D.C. area alone, you can be sure that there will be a Smithsonian museum here that will interest you.

Some of the notable museums to see include the National Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum. Truth be told, you could easily spend months exploring all the museums here; they are huge and easily one of the best places in Washington.
Oh yeah, and since these three are right in the mall itself, it makes for easy access after your walk.
No trip to D.C. wouldn’t be complete without a stop next to Abe Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial.

“Visitors to DC know that there are many monuments and memorials to explore, many Smithsonian museums and many outdoor activities, as well as great dining,” said U.S. News managing travel editor Erin Shields.

U.S. News considers many different things when evaluating a destination. Everything from the number of museums and accessibility to the cultural sites, the atmosphere and — the friendliness?
“We do a lot of research around reviews — whether it’s hotels, attractions, things to do, tours — and find out what visitors have to say about the people they interact with,” Shields said. “It’s definitely hard.”
“Continue to welcome visitors, offer lots of exciting things to do and see,” Shields said. “I think continuing to offer a great restaurant scene and a lot of tours and attractions really appeals to all types of visitors — everyone from family travelers to couples to solo travelers.”
“I think the people who live in the area (U.S. News is outside of Washington) should definitely be grateful and take advantage of the things that need to be done,” Shields said.

“I think living here is probably a great thing because there are so many museums and attractions. … So if you’re not using it, I would really try to do it before the end of the year.
Williamsburg, Virginia ranked No. 5 in the Best Historic Cities list, as well as No. 9 in the Best Small Cities category.
“Williamsburg is pretty unique. You have costumed interpreters who take guests on guided tours so people can learn more about the history of the Revolutionary War. A really interesting thing they do is ghost tours, which people seem to really enjoy,” Shields said.
