The West Loop is one of Chicago’s hippest neighborhoods, and the entire hotel seems to echo that feeling. The rooms are purposefully utilitarian (a typical Ace brand aesthetic) but still very comfortable, and some even come with their own turntable or guitar. After being away for so long, I still think about the charming views from my east facing room and the rooftop.

Pros: The on-site Commons Club is a hybrid high-end bar, lounge and shared space that looks nothing like a hotel. The rooftop lounge offers panoramic views of the skyline that feel like an added perk.

Cons: Hotel can be noisy. It’s right next to the El tracks and you can hear the trains and the loud music filtering down from the rooftop bar to the rooms on the upper floors.

Built by Sir Richard Branson, the first Virgin Hotels in Chicago opened in 2015 inside the Old Dearborn Bank building. Steps away from Michigan Avenue in Chicago’s Loop, the downtown boutique hotel offers a fresh approach to luxury and modern conveniences for young business types and tech-savvy travelers. One app is used for check-in, room service requests (which are actually managed by a delivery service like Door Dash), and it also serves as a remote control for your TV.

Each room (called chambers) in the 26-story hotel is divided into two areas, with a large dressing area, closet space, and shower separated from the bedroom by a set of sliding doors. The weather is cold and useless. I love that the Virginia has no hidden fees and that they offer “street level” pricing for minibar items and videos on demand without the usual fees at similarly inflated hotels.

Pros: Everything looks and feels new, with rooms and public spaces that are clean, modern and spacious. The hotel is located just steps from the Chicago Riverwalk.

Cons: If you want to walk right out the door and find lots of restaurants and shops, the hotel can feel a little off the beaten path since it’s a couple of blocks up Michigan Avenue.

The Loews Chicago Hotel is housed in a gleaming 52-story glass and steel tower and is favored by business travelers who shun grand or traditional hotels like this one in favor of a clean, sleek approach. Unlike many Chicago hotels that are housed in restored historic buildings, I love the innovation of Loews. The spacious public spaces feel modern and the rooms, while decent in size, still feel airy.

I was also impressed by the huge rooftop terrace (one of the largest in the city) and the state-of-the-art 24-hour fitness center and large indoor pool. The hotel is located one block from the Chicago River and a five-minute walk to Michigan Avenue.

Pros: The vintage, gothic-inspired design is filled with historic charm and character. The location next to Millennium Park also means great views of the park and lake.

Cons: The location in the city center and being inside a historic building means that the rooms can be smaller than expected. Also, the local popularity of the on-site restaurants (especially Cindy’s Rooftop) can lead to an unacceptable wait.

Originally the home of an elite men’s club, the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel Building is an architectural gem that dates back to 1893. Converted to a boutique hotel in 2015, the lobby has always been in keeping with Harvard’s Hogwarts aesthetic.

Many of the beautiful rooms at this Hilton Curio Collection property overlook the Chicago River, and I highly recommend our Vista Suite for its beautiful river views and comfortable accommodations. Cons: If you stay on the weekend, it can feel a little empty in the Circle, which tends to accommodate the weekday crowd. Many nearby restaurants will be closed.

Nestled among the skyscrapers of the Loop, the Kimpton Gray Hotel is ideal for downtown business travelers, but it’s far from the cookie-cutter business hotel you might expect. Officially known as the New York Life Insurance Building, the impressive building dates back to 1894. The hotel takes its name from the preserved Georgia Gray marble found throughout the restored interior.

IHG properties combine such historic features with modern guest rooms with elegant furnishings. Upgrade to the King Spa Room for a walk-in shower and separate bathtub, which is great after a long day at work.
