Best Places To Stay In Old San Juan Puerto Rico
Located in the historic walled city of Old San Juan, Hotel El Convento is a former Carmelite monastery dating back to 1651. The monastery was vacated by the monks in 1903 and left to fall into ruin in the 1950s. It was preserved by Puerto Rico tourism, cultural workers and millionaire Robert Woolworth, who bought it in 1962 and turned it into a luxury European-style hotel. A multimillion-dollar effort restored the original convent’s intricate beauty and Spanish features, including Andalusian tiles, mahogany beams and antique hacienda-style furnishings. In 2004, Old San Juan was named one of America’s Top Ten Special Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
