Reopened in 2015, this elegant hotel in the heart of Times Square boasts 330 spacious rooms and a century-long history of celebrities and visitors strolling across its polished marble floors. The rooftop terrace boasts stunning views and a cigar lounge, or party at Charlie Palmer at the Knick. The French Renaissance-style exterior and a copper mansard roof feel wonderfully old in New York.
Past towering skyscrapers, hot dog vendors and the always hectic Time Square is hip, modern Row NYC. It’s a hotel of Time Square proportions, with 28 floors, more than 1,000 rooms and a busy lobby. Café District transforms into a pizza bar and cocktail lounge in the evening. Have a slice and a good drink after a night at the cinema.
Broadway is just outside the door, but inside the Muse Hotel, the limestone and brick is a sophisticated and welcome calm. There is a long marble wine bar and NIOS restaurant, usually full of stylish guests and New Yorkers. Each room has a bust of the Greek goddess Thalia, and surrealist prints decorate the walls. If you call the front desk, they will answer with “How can I inspire you?”
Sure, you’re in the city that never sleeps, but you still want shuteye. At the Night Theater District Hotel (not to be confused with the Night Hotel Times Square a few blocks away), sexy black-and-white decor, blackout curtains, and comfortable, NYC-sized rooms make it easy to sleep well. When you wake up from your slumber, there’s a sushi restaurant and you’re just steps from Times Square and Broadway. Bonus: bedside tables here are filled with Kama Sutra books.

American architect Stanford White, of Washington Square Arch and Madison Square Garden fame, designed this building in 1905 for the prestigious theater company The Lambs. Today, the neo-Georgian building is one of the most luxurious hotels in New York. It is lovely, with oak paneled walls, chrome details and an 18th century French fireplace. See and be seen at Geoffrey Zakarian’s The Lambs Club, where the art deco vibe matches the lobby.
This cozy boutique is an oasis in the middle of super intense Times Square. Inspired by the Moroccan city and the classic film, Casablanca Hotel is rich with Humphrey Bogart nods and period decor – think blue-and-white tiles and rattan furniture. Rooms are small but cozy, and guests can take part in the complimentary wine and cheese hour every evening at Rick’s Café.
Once upon a time, the New Yorker magazine was founded here at this Midtown West landmark. The Harvard and Yale Clubs are on the same block, and tuxedo-clad waiters serve guests as they have for more than a century. The vintage appeal is backed by real literary pedigree – William Faulkner, Maya Angelou and a whole host of famous writers have stayed at The Algonquin. (It can’t hurt to bring your notebook.) There’s a cat on the house called Matilda, an Edwardian oak-panelled lobby and plush banquettes at the Blue Bar.
This French Renaissance-style landmark has been through many high-profile renovations, including designs by Ian Schrager and Philipe Starck. The latest, by Meyer Davis, includes a gorgeous two-story lobby and a fireplace perfect for cozying up in the winter. (The renovation price tag came in at $40 million…so no surprise it’s really, really nice.) Theaters line the street outside, and the TKTS booth, where same-day theater tickets are deeply discounted, is just steps away.

Think the theater district is full of crazy tourists? Think again. The party is always raging at Room Mate Grace Hotel, where the 24-hour pool and pool bar hosts Drip every Wednesday night, a gay pool party full of buff boys and drag queens. The facilities are simple and the rooms are small, but the design is playful (smart?) and bright, and the disco lights beckon. PS: In case you’re wondering about the name, Roommate Grace is an imaginary savvy New Yorker, ready to show guests around the big city.
W Hotel fans know the price is high, but so are the perks: nice gym, solid service, sceney bar, feather beds with pillowtop mattresses, goose down pillows, and 350-thread-count sheets. It’s easy to walk or take the subway to almost anywhere in New York City—the W is just blocks from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Radio City Music Hall, and Rockefeller Center—and then come back to sunbathe in the rain showers and enjoy seafood at Blue Fin, or guacamole at Dos Caminos.

Nyc Hotel Week 2023: A Good Time To Visit New York City
Sign up for our newsletter to enjoy the best around – it costs nothing. COVID-19 has closed all Broadway venues. How it will reopen is not clear. Will every other seat be kept empty? It may conflict with the financial requirements of commercial theatre. Insiders weigh in on the matter. (May 4)
It’s so new that the website only shows a slick video of a young couple walking behind a scaffolding entrance, past a worker tiling tiles, and into an elegant elevator that takes them to their room.
But the Civilian Hotel—the latest creation by architect David Rockwell, set to open in October and run by SIXTY Collective—is a celebration of old Broadway, dressed by Broadway insiders.
You can’t book a room yet, but once you can, it will likely be the most Broadway of Broadway hotel.

Rockwell, a Tony winner for the jewel-box set he created for 2016’s “She Loves Me,” will tap Broadway designer friends to curate permanent and rotating art exhibits, of their work as costume and set designers and photographers, in Civilian’s restaurant, its secret garden and the bars on the second floor and on the roof.
Opening delayed a year by the pandemic, the 27-story, 203-room hotel on 48th Street, just west of Eighth Avenue, will be steps from the Walter Kerr and Longacre theaters, home of “Hadestown” and “Diana.”
What will Civilian be like on Broadway? Tony-winning set designer Tony Walton and others have created sketches of each of the 41 Broadway theaters, to be incorporated into custom sconces throughout the first floor.
And framed costume designs by William Ivey Long will adorn each guest room, which – at 150 square meters for “cosy” and 260 for “spacious” – is bound to remind some of backstage wardrobes.

People of a certain age will remember the Milford Plaza commercials of the 80s, with bellhops and receptionists dancing to the “Lullaby of Broadway” – the hotel was touted as the best for theatergoers. Today, Milford goes by Row NYC, and it’s still a pretty swell place to live in the theater district. The hotel has a fitness centre, lounge and internet lounge. And, of course, the concierge desk will help you book your Broadway tickets. For dining, try District M, a cafe by day and lounge by night, and City Kitchen, a food market with sandwiches, pastries and more.
Langham is on the more expensive side, but here you get what you pay for. Rest for the night on a Swedish Duxiana bed in your elegant hotel room. Dine at Ai Fiori, a Michelin-starred restaurant led by chef Michael White. Drink cocktails at Bar Fiori or coffee at Sky Terrace, the outdoor cafe. The Langham is also offering a Broadway package until the end of the year. It includes a private tour of the Broadway District for up to four guests, daily breakfast for two served in your suite, and free parking for one vehicle.
CitizenM’s lobby is decorated with striking murals, shelves full of quirky decor and cool modern furniture. The rooms are small but functional and can accommodate a maximum of two adults.
