Urgent Call For Blood Donations As Thai Hospitals Face Critical Shortage
4 Dr. Ang Ai Leen, Group Director, Blood Services Group, HSA, said, “We are grateful for the unwavering support of our blood donors, and we wanted to make blood donation more convenient. With the release of this all-in-one DonateBlood app, we hope to make it easier for new blood donors to become donors and more regular for existing donors.”
5 Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General and CEO of the Singapore Red Cross, added: By putting information at their fingertips for donors, we hope to see healthier individuals, especially youth, make blood donation a part of their lifestyle and encourage their peers to support this lifesaving cause.”
6 Currently, only 1.8% of Singapore’s population is a blood donor. Only about 40% of blood donors donate blood at least twice a year. Regular blood donation is critical to ensuring a stable blood supply to support the country’s transfusion needs. HSA urges healthy blood donors to continue making regular blood donation a priority and use the DonateBlood app to schedule an appointment today.

Donate Blood Today!
The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) are asking for blood donors to help replenish low levels of all blood types, especially type O.
On Wednesday (December 11), the SRC and HSA said in a statement that the type O inventory is only half of what is needed and that universal blood types are needed in emergency situations where a patient’s blood type is unknown. .
Although universal donors, people with type O blood can only receive blood from the same group, which is half of Singapore’s patients.
Therefore, over the next three weeks, 1,500 people with type O, 750 people with type A, and 750 people with type B should donate blood to bring the national blood stock back to a healthy level.
Things To Know Before You Donate Blood In 2019
“This will ensure Singapore has enough blood to support patients’ transfusion needs and medical emergencies,” the SRC and HSA said.
Donors should go to the Bloodbank at HSA, Dhoby Ghaut, Woodlands or Westgate Tower to donate blood.
Donors must also be healthy individuals between the ages of 16 and 60 and weigh at least 45 kg. People who have not donated blood in the past 12 weeks can donate.
It is recommended that blood donors take a light meal and plenty of fluids before donating, and take enough rest the day before and the day of blood donation.
Is It Safe To Donate Blood?
Parental consent is required for donors between the ages of 16 and 17. The form can be found on the HSA website.

In our previous article on TOC, we talked about how blood donations in Singapore are declining, as in most developed countries. Between 2008 and 2018, donors in the 16 to 25 age group fell from nearly 23,000 to 18,000 per year. Young people simply don’t give much in Singapore.
According to the HSA, as of 2018, Singapore needs about 325 units of blood per day, or 118,750 units per year.

And blood can’t be stored indefinitely in an intact state that can only be stored for 35 days after it’s donated. This means that the amount of blood that can be stored at any given time is limited. That is why it is essential for a country to have a stable supply of donated blood throughout the year.
Fortunately, the SRC website has a meter showing the latest blood supply levels available in Singapore. For example, as of December 11, 2019, stocks of O, A, and B positive blood are all at risk levels. Except for the B-positive, which is a healthy level, the rest are normal.
