Salon manager Emily Durant explains that the machines are adjustable, and users can change the intensity depending on the complexion and sensitivity of the skin.

“All of our machines can play music through your phone,” Durant said. “We have cables that connect directly to them, so you can play your music while you’re there and play whatever you want.”

Durant said the salon’s location should be ideal for Adams residents, who explained that they don’t have many nearby tanning options. In addition to Secret Sun, the closest tanning salons for Adams residents are in Pittsfield and Bennington, Vt.

The salon is part of 1Berkshire’s “Pop Up, North Berkshire” program, which provided funds to help open four pop-up businesses in Adams and North Adams this year. The program was funded by a one-time grant from the State Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development.

“We’re excited to see the redevelopment of the entire corridor, and this is another great asset,” said Ben Lamb, director of economic development for 1Berkshire, who was also on hand to celebrate the opening. “Knowing that the market is here, there is a need, and you are fulfilling it. What you have done is the perfect space for it.”

The Adams Incubator, which opened earlier this year, was the first business to open as part of the project in town. Lamb said all four have been open since the program ended.
