The college’s president, Greg Mosier, said his school’s elected board of trustees made campus housing a top priority when he took the job in 2018.

“The purpose of this building is to really show our students how much we care about their success,” Mosier said at the dedication ceremony for Centennial Hall in July.

Bradbury chose community college because it was more affordable than a four-year school, and because it gave her the opportunity to continue playing softball at a competitive level. She could commute from home, but she wanted to be close to her teammates, many of whom had moved to other parts of Kansas or out of state to Wyandotte County.

For years, KCKCC has helped athletes and other students lease apartments in an aging complex near its campus. Last year, about 100 students had to relocate because of the mold problem.

“First I was put up in a hotel and then I had to move home,” Bradbury said.

Eventually, the school helped him find a different apartment. This school year, she is looking forward to less drama and more time to focus on her studies as a mass communication major.

Sean Dirtt, KCKCC dean of student services, said research has shown that safe housing on or near campus improves academic outcomes for community college students.

“There’s less distraction. They don’t have to travel from home,” he said. “They’re able to engage in campus activities. It allows them to focus on education.”

Rural community colleges in Kansas and Missouri have for years offered some form of housing for students who visit their campuses to participate in athletics or special programs, or who simply want an affordable option.

Residential accommodations are more uncommon at two-year schools located in urban areas, such as KCKCC. Johnson County Community College does not have on-campus housing, nor does the Metropolitan Community College System have campuses in Kansas City.

With the opening of Centennial Hall, KCKCC has become part of a movement among community colleges across the country to help students address the lack of affordable housing.

In a 2020 survey by the Hope Center for College, Community and Justice at Temple University in Philadelphia, 52% of community college students who responded said they had trouble finding housing or meeting rent and expenses. . These include partnering with nonprofits or lobbying for state funds to build residence halls.

“We’re not a four-year school, we’re not a research institution with thousands of dollars to throw around,” Mosier said.

To fund the $20 million Centennial Hall project, Mosier secured revenue bonds that would be paid off over time with fees students pay to live in the building.

Centennial Hall contracts call for students to pay $5,700 during the fall and spring semesters. That comes out to about $630 a month, which is less expensive than listed rents for apartments near campus and includes utilities.

With approximately 7,000 students enrolled at KCKCC in the 2021 academic year, one residence hall will not meet everyone’s housing needs. Children and spouses cannot live with students in Centennial Hall, and 140 units are reserved for student-athletes, who find their way to KCKCC from across the country and even overseas.

Most students will live in suites with four individual bedrooms and shared kitchen and bath facilities. The building has multiple gathering spaces and study pods and a gaming and entertainment area in the basement.

“I like that the dorms look like little apartments,” said Elizabeth Daniels, a student resident advisor. “It’s a big, wide open space.”

Daniels, a 2020 graduate of Sumner Academy of Arts and Science in the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools, spent her first year at home at KCKCC, taking online classes for her business major.

Moving into Centennial Hall would be her first chance to have a room to herself. At home, she shares quarters with a sibling.
