The Bullock Hotel was built by Seth Bullock between 1894 and 1896 from a converted warehouse into a 3-story hotel shortly after the Deadwood Fire of 1894, which destroyed the original two-story wood-frame building and devastated much of the town of Deadwood. It is believed that the hotel was originally built and decorated in an “Italianate” and Victorian style with the first floor of the hotel boasting a large dining room at the rear, a kitchen and pantry, a sample room where vendors could store their cases, a large hotel lobby and offices in front.

The second and third floors are said to house 63 luxury bedrooms with bathrooms down the corridors and two large sets of skylights to illuminate the interior spaces with natural light. It is also believed that all the rooms were furnished with iron and brass beds and oak furniture.

The hotel was sold to the Aryes family, who converted the building into a hardware store in 1976.

Until around 1991, when the new owners, Bullock Properties, later remodeled the building to turn it into a hotel. The original furnishings were auctioned off by the Aryes family in 1976, so between 1991 and 1993 the hotel underwent extensive wanderings to recreate the original atmosphere and decor. The current owners state that the hotel has been “carefully restored using the best available late 19th century information and uncovering details that gave clues to the original decor.”

Some of the changes included lowering some of the ceilings (due to heat build-up in the ceilings), stripping paint and repainting most of the furniture, and redressing and decorating the ceilings to reflect the hotel’s original Victorian design. 48-inch solid brass chandeliers were also featured as lamps, selected from replicas of the period. The kitchen and pantry were further converted into a restaurant and bar, Bully’s, named after Teddy Roosevelt, who was Seth Bullock’s lifelong crush.

In short, despite reported attempts to preserve the original floor plans as much as possible, the former 63 rooms were reduced to 28 in the renovation. This is said to have resulted in some rather unusual rooms with odd shapes and angles and a larger version of the original rooms from 1895. Modern plumbing and rovation brought the bathrooms from the corridor, and all rooms are equipped with private bathrooms. Some luxury rooms are also said to have Jacuzzis and wet bars.

Contrary to popular belief, Seth Bullock did not die at the hotel in room 211, but at his home at 28 Van Bur Street. It is possible that false reports of his death at the hotel spread reports of his ghost being seen at the hotel, which guests, workers and tourists continue to this day.

Many people who are said to have been in contact with Bullock’s spirit say that they have never felt bad, but have only been touched or called to them. Apparitions and orbs were often reported by guests. Employees say that the ghost just continues to “play host” and often makes sure that “his” employees are working hard, as many employees have said that they felt a paranormal presence during breaks and went right back to work.
