Located within the central area of Singapore, Orchard Road is famous for its many shopping malls. However, it has always been a pain when it comes to disposing of food in the orchard, as most of the time it involves burning a hole in our pocket. Did you know you can easily get a meal at Orchard for $10 or less than $5? We are talking about foods that can satisfy your stomach and your palette. How about getting a wall mounted buddha bowl for just $10? Mini dishes such as dried scallops, abalone, mushrooms, sea cucumbers and fish maw cooked in abundance, taste mild and tender. Actually it’s lighter than the shen zi soup but still decent. A set comes with a small plate of bean sprouts and a bowl of rice. Peramkan is a highly recommended place, because the food is delicious! For 1 meat and 2 vegetables, this meal costs $8.80. The beef rendang was tender and full of the aroma of spices. The spiciness really hits the spot but it’s too addictive to resist. The curried vegetables and lady fingers were also on point. If you are ever shopping around Orchard Road, this is a must try!
Saver at Far East Plaza is under the same organization that manages Saver Art located at Ion. The signature Saveur’s Pasta comes in two portions, $4.90 and $10.50. The latter is equal to the principal. The pasta includes chili oil, chopped kombu, pork, sakura ebi. A little on the dry side, the pasta was just out of the ordinary. It was delicious with a touch of spiciness. Sakura AB also gave the pasta a crunchy texture and a slightly salty taste.
Located a few stalls away in the Lucky Food Center, the Hua Ji Sliced Fish Soup ($4) also gathers plenty of customers. Be prepared to queue for about 5 to 10 minutes before taking your order, and since the food center is so small, it might be best to find a friend to help you “chop” seats while you queue. A thumbs up for their fragrant soup as they are very generous with their Shao Xing wine. However, even though the soup was addictive, their sliced fish was quite thin and their fried fish was a bit salty.
The famous Indonesian BBQ can be found at 313@Somerset from the kopitiam at Plaza Singapura. They have the usual Ayam Panggang, Ikan Panggang and Sotong Panggang which can be ordered as ala carte or with a set that comes with a drink. The price range is from $5 to $8.60. I always go for the Ayam Panggang where a large chicken thigh is grilled to doneness and drizzled with a black sauce that has a balance of sweet and savory.

A small cozy eatery located in a corner of Cuppage Plaza, Orchard Yong Tau Foo features fresh ingredients such as stuffed tofu, mushroom, bitter gourd, meatballs, broccoli and cabbage. The ingredients are cooked and served in a flavorful broth made from soybeans. For only 7 ingredients with noodles, it costs only $5.60.
As with all Pork Ribs Soup ($7 / $9), the quality of the dish depends heavily on the quality of the pork. With this in mind, Song Fa uses good quality pork that is carefully simmered with garlic and chili to achieve a clear and peppery soup. The chili kick is not overpowering, balanced by the sweetness from the pork ribs. Another signature dish is the braised pig trotters ($7 / $9) which are cooked with a variety of spices to achieve intense flavor and mouth-watering tenderness. At Greenview Cafe, you can enjoy traditional handmade Mee Hoon Kueh. The Dry Mee Hoon Kueh with Minced Pork ($4.50) has chewy Mee Hoon Kueh and you can tell it’s handmade because they were all oddly shaped. As my spicy was served, the level of spiciness was so intense that my lips were slightly swollen. So if you can’t take spicy, you can choose soup or non-spicy.
This humble-looking stall is tucked away in a corner of Lucky Plaza, and serves a wide variety of Indonesian dishes for their nasi padang. They have spicy and non-spicy dishes. Their green chilli chicken was very mild and not spicy, but if you favor the spicy version, there is the usual curry chicken. The dishes can be quite spicy, so be sure to ask if you can’t have spicy food before ordering. For this plate of nasi padang, which has fish, eggplant and chicken, the damage was $10.

A traditional Hainanese chicken rice stall in Far East Plaza, this has been my chicken rice fix since secondary school days (no joke). Their soft chicken rice costs $4 and you can add an egg for just $0.50. The chicken itself melts in your mouth, full of flavors. You can serve it with thick soy sauce and refreshing chili. There is free soup for every diner. It’s a fairly small shop so if you’re going to eat there at lunchtime, be sure to be early or you’ll have to wait for a seat.
Eddy Ongkowijaya, owner of Dapur Penyet, is considered by many to be the first person to introduce Ayam Penyet to Singapore. Using a batter deep-fried with rice flour and egg, the Ayam Paneat ($9.50) is not overcooked and retains a nice juiciness. The skin is wonderfully crispy, yet not tough. It comes with a batch of boiled kang kang, a piece of tempeh (yeasted soybean cake) and beancurd. Depur Penyet has a unique point – they have 5 different types of sambal of different spiciness, with origins from different parts of Indonesia. The chicken cutlet was the star of Redring Treasures. These cutlets are marinated in their secret marinade for 24 hours and fried fresh to order to give you a crispy exterior with a tender and juicy interior. The egg noodles boast a springy texture when accompanied by their signature umami rich sauce, which complements the cutlets very well. Not exactly a snack bar, but they have a great variety of Zee Char dishes. The Salted Egg Pork Ribs Rice ($6) is really well executed. The pork rib was tender and easy to chew but we would have been a little more satisfied if it had a little more crispiness. The sauce, on the other hand, was excellent, featuring the right balance of rich creaminess and aroma. There were curry leaves which added to its aroma and chilli padi which gave it a nice kick. This beautiful chutney did not taste gelatinous at all and we enjoyed every mouthful. We would highly recommend this dish to anyone who is in town and wants some fun yet affordable food. Church On The Hill
Tasty Treats is conveniently located next to the New Station Snack Bar. The Fish Fillet Noodle ($4) is an interesting mix of fried filet fillet with wonan mee noodles. The fish fillet is crispy and juicy, like from a western food stall. The noodles were also al dente, and especially loved when eaten with chili.
Real Food Cafe, located on Killiney Road, is a vegetarian restaurant. Despite the restaurant’s zen furnishings, the mushroom aglio olio ($10.80) tasted bland. In fact it lacked the garlic aroma and was not tasty. It had some spiciness but that was all.
Specializing in their Ayam Panayet ($7.90), the set comes with smashed chicken, fried tempeh, fried tofu, blanched kong kong, sambal chili and rice. For those who love spicy food, their Sambal Belachan will definitely not disappoint you. Spicy yet addictive, it was literally love-hate when you want to have sambal but your mouth is already burning. The chicken was tasty as you could taste the spices used, however the meat was a bit tough and dry.
For $9.90, you can get a bowl of beef pho at Tonkin Vietnamese Noodles Bar. The rice noodle was al dente, but the soup could have tasted better with more flavors from the beef broth. There was a generous portion of beef and vegetables, so if you’re not into flavor, it’s well worth it.
