Part of a large dining chain, the food is delicious and kid-friendly, but the real draw is the atmosphere. Your children will feel like they are on an adventure in the depths of a tropical forest. If you’re planning to visit this Chicago cafe with kids, it’s fun and fear-free.

Although the Chicago location closed in August 2020 as a result of the pandemic, the Gurnee Mills location is still open. It’s a bit of a drive, but still a fun way to pass the time. If you’re not quite ready to dine indoors, you can order takeout.

Face coverings are required at all American Girl stores. Entrances and capacity are limited. Dining is still possible, but hours and table sizes are limited, so reservations are even more important than they used to be. Temporarily, the cafe switched to one-off menus and removed the loaner dolls.

Located in Schaumburg, Medieval Times (Chicago Castle) brings to life the adventures of princes, princesses, knights and the 11th century in one family-friendly dining experience. It’s the perfect place to train little princesses and knights of all ages. Best with the 4- to 10-year-old crowd, adults will have a good time too. The menu includes tomato bisque soup, roast chicken, buttered corn and no utensils. Vegetarian options can be provided on request (but ask in advance!).

Not a great place for little kids, Billy Goat Tavern is a solid choice for pre-teens and teens. With nine locations serving the Chicago area, the chain is a local favorite with a quirky and fun backstory.
