One question I get asked more than any other is, “What’s my favorite restaurant in Austin?” While this is not a guide to Austin’s best restaurants, I thought it prudent to offer a guide to Austin’s most popular places.

This guide provides a list of restaurants that have helped Austin make a name for itself and are the most visited by visitors and locals alike. From world-famous Central Texas BBQ to authentic Mexican cuisine and Detroit-style pizza, some of these establishments were Austin staples before Elon Musk and Google knew Austin was a cool city.
The Local Dish
| Franklin Barbecue is the place that changed everything about modern barbecue in Austin and Texas. Their well-deserved reputation as a barbecue spot in Austin goes beyond the legendary. Multiple locations in Austin | Via313 pizza defines the beauty of a Detroit-style pie. Brothers Brandon and Zane Hunt make their own thick, fluffy and chewy cold-fermented dough crust, giving delicious texture to the crispy caramelized cheese crust that covers all four edges of the pie. This buttery square, baked in a square silver pan taken out of the oven, is topped with two strips of freshly grated tomato sauce, drizzled after baking, over melted cheese.
