It was built around 1895 by Seth Bullock, the former sheriff of Deadwood, and his business partner Sol Starr for $40,000.

And it’s the oldest hotel in Deadwood, boasting a casino, restaurant and 28 of the original 63 rooms.

Hickok’s Hotel And Gaming, Deadwood

The Bullock Hotel was built between 1894 and 1896 by Seth Bullock and was converted from a warehouse into a 3-story hotel in 1996. The hotel was originally built and decorated in an “Italianate” and Victorian style, and the first floor of the hotel consisted of a large dining room at the back, a kitchen and pantry, a sample room where salesmen could store their goods, a large hotel lobby and offices at the front.

The second and third floors have 63 luxurious bedrooms with bathrooms down the hall, and two large skylights are said to illuminate the interiors with natural light. It is also believed that all rooms are filled with iron and bronze beds and oak furniture.

The hotel was sold to the Aries family, who converted the building into a hardware store in 1976

In the year It wasn’t until around 1991 that the building was converted into a hotel again by new owners, Bullock Properties. The original furnishings were auctioned off by the Arius family in 1976, so in 1991-1993 the hotel was redecorated to recreate the original atmosphere and decor. Curt’s owners say the hotel has been “carefully restored to the best of the late 1800s, identifying details that hint at the original decor.”

Some of the changes included lowering some of the ceilings (due to heat build-up on the roof), stripping and repainting most of the woodwork, and redecorating and redecorating the ceilings, which were intended to reflect the hotel’s original Victorian design. 48-inch solid brass chandeliers were also introduced as light fixtures, selected from period replicas. The kitchen and pantry were also converted into a restaurant and bar, Bully’s, named for Seth Bullock’s lifelong friend, Teddy Roosevelt.

Overall, the original 63 rooms were reduced to 28 in the renovation in an attempt to retain as much of the original floor plan as possible. This resulted in some unusual parts with unusual shapes and angles and a wider version of the main part from 1895. Modern faucets and sinks line the sinks from the hallway and all rooms have private baths. Some luxury rooms reportedly have jacuzzis and wet bars.

Contrary to popular belief, Seth Bullock did not die in room 211 of the hotel, but in his home at 28 Van Burr Street. False reports of his death at the hotel spawned reports of his ghost being seen at the hotel, which continues to this day among guests, staff and tourists.

Many people who are said to have had contact with Bullock’s spirit say that they were not harmed, but were simply touched or summoned. Apparitions and orbs have been reported many times by guests. According to the workers, the ghost continued to “play host” and often made sure that “his” workers were working hard, as many workers said they would take a break, feel a paranormal presence, and immediately return to work.
