The east side of Singapore has always been known as a food lover’s paradise. Joo Chiat in particular has been a food heaven for me since childhood. An eclectic mix of old-world cafes and modern dining concepts give Joo Chiat an alluring atmosphere that sets it apart from other neighborhoods. Here are 23 of our favorite Joo Chiat and Katong restaurants that we think the rest of Singapore should know about!

Unlike the typical char kway teow and Hokkien mee, wok-fried mee sua is much more difficult to find in Singapore. Located in a trendy hawker bar, Yong Huat is the main reason I keep coming back to the East. The lightly charred, lard-coated, silky Mee Sua (from $7) will instantly win you over with its nostalgic sinfulness. The portions are generous, with plenty of vegetables, prawns, pork belly and loads of great, crispy lard.

It’s possible to eat well without breaking the bank, especially with the Awfully Chocolate Bakery & Cafe dining set for just $25++ per person. Available daily from 6pm to 9pm, the value set includes a starter – we recommend the roasted cauliflower salad – and your choice of main course.
Highlights also include the Angus Sirloin Steak (add $3++), flame-grilled to your choice of doneness and served with truffle pumpkin puree. It is finished with a drop of homemade pepper sauce, which lifts the dish with a peppery hit. Alternatively, have the Pulled Beef Mafalde, featuring al dente pasta in a spicy tomato sauce, paired with tender Angus pulled beef and grated Parmesan.
If you visit for lunch instead, definitely go for the weekday set lunch which is also a good value at $22++ for two courses. The must-try main is the Seabass Fish & Chips (top up 3++), featuring lightly battered sea bass, served alongside crispy fries and creamy French pea puree.

Easties, bookmark Supperman Speakeasy & Grill for your next dinner or drinking sesh. This new addition to the Joo Chiat range offers top quality, flame-grilled Angus steaks, craft cocktails, plus a curated selection of wines. Start with the Supperman’s Great Start ($15++), starring charcoal-grilled focaccia with beef butter, made from rendered beef fat. It is also served with a tasting portion of house wine. If you’re in the mood for more booze, top up your 5++ and get a full glass of wine!
Then move on to the star of the show: the Black Angus Ribeye Steak ($38++). Contains a 300g slice of Argentinian Black Angus beef, seared and seared to perfection, topped with anchovy butter for an umami hit.

Vietnamese shops in Singapore are popping up faster than I can say “pho”, but Sandwich Saigon has my loyalty for its banh mi. Their Saigon Special ($8) comes with juicy pork belly, ham and house pickled carrots and cucumbers sandwiched between a crunchy, chewy baguette. Their secret weapon lies in their baguette: the dough is lovingly made and baked every morning at 5am. They also do a homemade bowl of Beef Pho ($12.90), which I personally prefer over many other pho chains.
Katong Mei Wei Boneless Chicken Rice has made a name for itself as one of the best chicken rice stalls in our small island town. Their Chicken Rice (from $6.70) comes with a generous portion of rice and tender, juicy chicken. The rice is extremely tasty and is cooked in yellow ginger, which explains its pretty yellow hue. If you decide to dine in, the stall offers loose cabbage soup, achar and fried pieces of garlic that are sprinkled on the chicken.
Gone are the days of sweating over Indian food at local cafes. Zaffron Kitchen brings us healthy Indian cuisine in a comfortable, elegant environment. My tried and true favorites would be their Butter Chicken ($19++) and Tandori Chicken ($17++ for half a chicken). Despite the luxurious interior, Zaffron Kitchen still manages to maintain the hearty and authentic nature of its dishes.

If you’re a fan of smoky, grilled American pub grub, Smokey’s BBQ is the place to be. The best part is that their prices are not outrageous and the portion sizes remain reasonable. Their meat is grilled with hickory wood chips, which gives it a distinct smokiness and tenderness. The signature Baby Back Pork Ribs ($35.31) is a must-have.
Guan Hoe Soon, a family-run Peranakan restaurant, is one of Singapore’s long-established Katong restaurants. Their decor is simple, classic and no frills, just like the food they serve. Specialties include Ngoh Hiang (from $15.80+), Nonya Chap Chye (from $14.80+) and of course Ayam Buah Keluak (from $18.80+).
Stirling Steaks is a modern steakhouse in Katong with a cool environment for tasty food. All of their steaks are charcoal grilled and the quality of their steaks is not compromised. Their 250g Striploin ($31.50++) is one of the most popular items on the menu. Every slice of beef is juicy, with a hint of smoke. If you’re pressed for cash, their Hanger Steak ($9.90++) is an affordable option. It contains tender beef that is cut from the shoulder of a cow and is drizzled with an herb salsa verde sauce.
Apart from other culinary specialties on this stretch, East Coast Road is also home to the famous 328 Katong Laksa. They have a limited menu, serving only dim sum and of course their famous Laksa (from $6.30) which is simple but tasty. Each bowl is filled with thick rice noodles, plump prawns, smooth fish cakes and fresh cockles, all smothered in a warm bed of their delicious, coconut-heavy sauce. Many Singaporeans have been raving about how they serve the best laksa in Singapore, so why not come down and try one of Katong’s best restaurants!

Many have heard of the phrase “You pay for what you get”, and Rakuya definitely challenged that idea. Their $118++ omakase certainly oozes quality and finesse, with an exciting array of high quality sashimi and a variety of hot dishes.
Not your typical cafe, Tea Villa Cafe prepares delectable vegetarian plates in a cozy environment. With a wide range of Lebanese, Mexican, Indian and even pizza, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Try their Mac and Cheese Pizza ($20++) which features a crispy four cheese pizza, fiery jalapeno and comforting macaroni. They also have a wide selection of teas with over 100 different flavors to choose from.
Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee is a famous hawker stall that has been giving away fried hokkien mee across generations. You can get it in four sizes: $6, $10, $15, and $20. It’s full of heady shrimp flavors and comes with crispy pork lard for added richness. Here you can also get the lesser-seen Pork Belly Satay ($1.60 each), which boasts a generous amount of char and a good fat-to-meat ratio.

LaMa.HotMaMa is a hidden find in i12 Katong, selling a unique fusion mala with handmade fish tofu, AKA yu hua. This small business operates the Bytes bistro concept off the cloud kitchen and is run by celebrity chef Melvyn Lee. Go for the Fusion Mala Yu Hua Fish Tofu ($9.80), which features five types of fish tofu tossed in a special mala sauce and topped with fried seaweed and crackling tobiko.
Brawn & Brains Coffee is another brunch-food haven on East Coast Road. Try their Fiery Meatball Spaghetti ($18.90+), which consists of meaty beef meatballs and spaghetti coated in a rich tomato sauce. Their Flat White ($5.50+) is an example of a solid beer. It is well balanced in terms of acidity and flavor profile and not too bitter.
Five Star Kampung Chicken Rice is another delicious food stall in Joo Chiat and Katong area. They only serve kampung chicken which is said to be tastier and lower in fat. Their chicken rice plates start at $6.50 and come with flavorful rice and juicy strips of chicken. Plus, their chili is strong and goes great with the tender chicken. It tasted garlicky and had an intense hint of spiciness.
