The spiciness really hits the spot, but it’s too addictive to stop. Curry with vegetables and lady’s fingers were also spot on. If you are ever shopping near Orchard Road this is a MUST TRY!
Saveur at Far East Plaza is run by the same organization that runs Saveur Art at Ion. Saveur’s signature noodles come in two servings, $4.90 and $10.50. The latter is equivalent to the main one. The noodles consist of chilli oil, chopped kombu, pork sauce, and ebi sakura. The slightly drier noodles were remarkable. It was spicy with a bit of spice. Sakura ebi also gave the noodles a crunchy texture and a slightly salty taste.
Located just a few stalls away at the Lucky Food Center, Hua Ji Sliced Fish Soup ($4) also draws in a fair amount of customers. Be prepared to queue for about 5 to 10 minutes before taking your order, and as the food center is rather small, it would be best to find a friend to help ‘chop’ the places in the queue. Thumbs up for their flavorful soup as they are very generous with shao xing wine. However, while the soup was addictive, their sliced fish was quite thin and the fried fish was slightly salty.
The famous Indonesian BBQ with Kopitiam in Plaza Singapore can be found at 313@Somerset. They have the usual Ayam Panggang, Ikan Panggang and Sotong Panggang which can be ordered as a la carte or with a drink combo. The price range is from $5 to $8.60. The Dry Mee Hoon Kueh with Minced Pork ($4.50) has mee hoon kueh chewy and you could tell it was handmade because they were all oddly shaped. Since mine was served spicy, the spiciness level was so shiok that my lips were slightly swollen. So if you are not able to take too spicy, you can choose soup or not spicy.
Tucked away in a corner of Lucky Plaza, this unassuming looking stall serves a wide range of Indonesian food for their Padang. They have spicy and not spicy dishes. Their green chili chicken was very tender and not spicy but if you prefer a spicy version there is plain curry chicken. The dishes can be quite spicy, so ask if you can’t eat spicy food before ordering. For this plate of Nasi Padang, which has fish, eggplant and chicken, the damage was $10.

It’s quite a small shop so if you’re going to eat there at mealtimes make sure to be early as you’ll have to wait for a seat.
The owner of Dapur Penyet, Edy Ongkowijaya, is considered by many to be the first person to introduce ayam penyet to Singapore. These cutlets are marinated for 24 hours in a secret marinade and freshly fried to order, giving you a crispy exterior with a tender and juicy interior. Not exactly a snack bar, but they have a good selection of zi char dishes. The Salted Egg Pork Ribs Rice ($6) is done really well. The pork rib was tender and chewy, but we would have enjoyed it a bit more if it had a bit of crispiness. The sauce, on the other hand, was lovely, with just the right balance of rich creaminess and flavor. There were curry leaves which enhanced its scent and chilli padi which gave it a good kick. Tasty Treats Restaurant is conveniently located next to New Station Snack Bar. The fish fillet noodle ($4) is an interesting mix of fried fish fillet with noodles in a kind of no-nonsense mee. The fish fillet is crispy and juicy, like from a western stall. The pasta was also al dente and especially love it when eaten with chilli.
Real Food Café, located on Killiney Road, is a vegetarian restaurant. Despite the zen-style furnishings of the restaurant, the Mushroom Aglio Olio ($10.80) tasted rather bland. It actually lacked the garlic smell and wasn’t spicy. It had a bit of spice, but that’s about it.
Specializing in their Ayam Penyet ($7.90), the set includes smashed chicken, fried tempe, fried tofu, blanched kang kong, chili sambal, and rice. For lovers of spicy food, their sambal belachan will definitely not disappoint you. Spicy yet addictive, it was literally love-hate when you want sambal but your mouth was already on fire. The chicken was flavorful as you could taste the seasoning used, however the meat was a bit tough and dry.
For $9.90, you can get a bowl of Beef Pho at the Tonkin Vietnamese Noodles Bar. The rice noodles were al dente but the soup could have tasted better with more flavors from the beef broth. There was a generous portion of beef and veggies, so if you’re not fussy about taste, it’s well worth the price.
