Nice Lunch Place Near Me – Back when the Downtown Line didn’t exist yet, I remember having to walk from Tanjong Pagar or Raffles Place MRT Station to visit Telok Ayer’s popular food spots. Imagine my excitement when the Downtown Line was finally completed; no more walking for ages and getting lost, even with the help of Google maps, in the name of food!
It seems that there are several others who share the same sentiments, as many popular restaurants and cafes in Telok Ayer have recently been packed, all trying to catch a seat with the best light for a good picture. I value personal space when I eat out, so here are some understated and reasonably priced Telok Ayer food places for those who think the same way as me!

Attached to the side of a Chinese temple, Chong Wen Ge Cafe serves a variety of mains and traditional Peranakan food. Nonya Laksa ($8.80) comes in big, and its portion is enough to make you salivate. Choose from a variety of Nonya Kueh ($1.50 each) to share and, of course, an #OOTD look is a must in such a beautiful setting.

Run by Koreans, Singkoba offers one of the cheapest Korean BBQ sets (from $18++ onwards) in Singapore. They only offer five BBQ sets, and my go-to is Set C ($68++ for 2-3 pax), which comes with seasoned beef ribs, marinated pork ribs, pork belly and soy sauce chicken. If your New Year’s resolution is to spend less, go with their cheaper a la carte options like Kimchi Stew ($13++) or Seafood Pancake ($14++). They open until midnight every day so you can go out with your crew until late!

The only Mediterranean food I used to eat was shakshuka, but the shawarma scene in The Avengers sparked my interest in Lebanese kebabs. Urban Bites helped me into the food, with their Shawarma Wrap ($15) consisting of house-made Lebanese bread stuffed with meat, pickles, and fries—definitely not a combi I’d imagine. They also offer a variety of other Mediterranean foods such as kebabs, falafel platters, fluffy pita bread, and couscous.

Located in China Square Food Center, Kyoto TSUBAKI-an DELI offers an ‘Obento Menu’ ($12) of boxed lunches that changes daily. Look out for Homemade Hamburg with Daikon Radish and Ponz Sauce, which features juicy beef glazed with a tangy, sweet sauce along with a generous helping of rice and vegetables. If you’re feeling saucy , Tonkatsu Curry Rice ($10) comes with fluffy white rice topped with a generous helping of Japanese curry, and a breaded pork cutlet encased.
The folks at Yi Jia Chun put hours of effort into their two-boil soup that’s comforting, nutritious and MSG-free. Black Fungus Chicken Soup ($5) is great for a rainy day pick-me-up, or when you just want a light lunch to make up for any previous heavy compensation. If you can’t live without carbs, fill your meal with yam rice ($2) or pumpkin rice ($2).
Nusantara Cuisine may not match Frenzlink Cafeteria in terms of price, but the former has a wider variety of dishes, and is located in a more centralized location within the CBD. Go for their hearty Mee Soto (from $4.50), which consists of thick yellow noodles swimming in a broth full of rempah flavor, topped with shredded chicken and chopped spring onions. Breakfast specials such as Bee Hoon Goreng ($3) are also available for the early birds.
Pho Days you can’t physically hug your momma at lunch, whip up a big bowl of piping hot noodles from Pho 99 Vietnamese Delight instead. Although it may sound simple, Chicken Pho ($8.90) is full of complex flavors from layering different spices and herbs. Bun Cha Gio ($9) is another hit featuring vermicelli noodles with your choice of protein and dipping sauce on the side. Eat it like you would a bowl of tsukemen, and either dip the noodles in the sauce, or pour the sauce over the noodles.

Looking for cheap ramen in the CBD is like looking for Pikachu while playing Pokemon Go – sorry. However, Beppu Menkan Japanese Noodle Restaurant surprised me with its affordable yet unique ramen bowls that come with a variety of toppings. Umi Jigoku ($13.80++) translates directly to ‘hell of the sea’ and includes an array of seafood such as mussels and prawns in a spicy soup broth. If you’re looking for something mild that won’t fill up a toilet cubicle, Char Siew Ramen ($11.80++) is a safe bet to stick with.

The Muffinry is often overlooked by passers-by, as it is just a tiny place on Telok Ayer street. However, the food they serve is great in taste and, more importantly, affordable. My top pick is The Char Siew Sandwich Set ($14) which has slow cooked pork smothered in a house-made glaze and spread between freshly baked Turkish bread . All sandwich sets come with your choice of muffin and beverage (not including smoothies and alcoholic beverages).

Good Restaurants For Lunch In Palma
Hachi Tei serves a wide variety of Japanese dishes at an affordable price, but it’s their bento sets that I go down. Saba Shioyaki Set ($12) is my favorite, and it comes with grilled mackerel fish, salad, fruit, rice and miso soup. If payday has just arrived, treat yourself to the Hachi Tei set ($21), the most expensive bento set of the lot that includes teriyaki chicken, vegetables and prawn tempura, plus fresh sashimi along with the usual rice and miso soup.

A very fresh dish is the Fried Chicken Chop Noodles ($5.50) which is another must. The juicy chicken thigh pieces were very tasty and juicy.
Mei Mei Roast Meat is actually run by the younger sister of former owner Kay Lee. Madam Lee takes care of the roasting and cutting while her assistant takes orders. Traditionally roasted over charcoal, the duck has a reddish-brown skin that resembles smokiness. The meat was full of flavor.
The char siew stole the show. Barely exposed, there was a thin layer of lean, fat and delicate flesh on the rind. I also love their Cantonese style boiled soups.
