Between two house stays, we planned a quick trip to Kansas City. We’ve got a lot of fun things to do in Kansas City, but we need to figure out where we’re going to eat. When we researched dining options, we discovered that there are many unique places to eat in Kansas City!
Nice Places To Eat In Kansas City
In fact, Kansas City is home to a variety of fresh and delicious foods. From the city’s OG gastropub to a renovated garage, you’ll want to add these fun Kansas City restaurants to your list.

First things first… if you are in Kansas City you have to eat the barbecue! We did some research when trying to figure out where to go for our first taste of Kansas City barbecue and the restaurant that keeps coming up is Q39. It is not considered one of the best restaurants in Kansas City, but it is considered one of the best places for barbecue.
This was our first visit to Kansas City, and our friendly staff helped us decide on a few courses. We had two appetizers of bacon-wrapped oysters and macaroni and cheese (both delicious!) and for our main course, we had brisket with hot sauce.
Now, let’s be completely honest here and say that barbecue is not our thing. But this brisket is one of the best we’ve ever had. It’s sweet, it tastes good, and it’s so soft you can cut it with your fork.
One of the most unique restaurants in Kansas City is Pizza 51. This pizzeria is located in a renovated gym! They serve thin-crust pizza, salads, sandwiches, and beer. They have an outdoor patio, which is a great place to enjoy their pizza on a warm day.
Best Shopping In Kansas City
One of the funnest places to eat in Kansas City is Succotash, a breakfast and brunch spot with a hippie vibe. They offer a range of baked goods – including the famous “bronuts” (aka brownie donuts) – and also have a full menu including many omelets and sandwiches. Succotash is a great option for vegans, as they have several vegan recipes, including vegan cinnamon rolls.
One of the best places to eat in Kansas City is Beer Kitchen. After a long day of sightseeing, we visited this restaurant, and their food was spot on. We also liked their fun and fun stuff.
For starters, we had the Cheesy Ancho Corn Dip with white chipotle cheddar and green corn chips. Wow, this dive is amazing! Then we had the BBQ Creekstone Short Rib with cheddar grits and kale. And finally, the Triple Cheese Grilled Cheese with Tillamook-aged cheddar, chipotle white cheddar, provolone, avocado, and oven-dried tomato on romano-encrusted sourdough.
Our mouths are watering just thinking about this recipe! The cheddar grits were amazing and paired with the short ribs. And the romano-encrusted sourdough of the grilled cheese… heavenly! We savored every bite!
Best Restaurants In Kansas City: It’s Much More Than Just A Barbecue Capital
Walking into Chez Elle gives you the same feeling as walking down a Parisian street lined with cafe tables. This creperie and coffee shop has transformed the Summit Theater into a traditional cafe serving every kind of crepe you can imagine, including salads, soups, and pastries.
I think you’d be hard pressed to find a Kansas City restaurant that is more fun and entertaining than Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant. As you can imagine, it is a train restaurant and yes, they have a model train running through the restaurant. You will be given a guide hat to wear so be prepared to go with the fun. (Even if it’s cheesy!)
A contender for the best breakfast in Kansas City is Room 39. They use seasonal ingredients sourced from local producers, and their menu is constantly changing. We ordered the Brioche French Toast, which consists of two slices of brioche smothered in cinnamon-egg custard and served with bacon and fries. We’ve never had French Toast with brioche bread before, so we were excited to find this dish!
Parlor is one of Kansas City’s best restaurant ideas and it’s where you go if you can’t decide what to eat. It’s a three-story building that houses seven different restaurants, from KC Mac ‘N Co with some delicious mac and cheese to Taco Tank, the “big taco cart” featuring tacos made with the freshest ingredients.
America’s Best Restaurants 2022
This is a fun place to eat if you are with a group because everyone can choose what they want and you can enjoy a single table.
The popular Made in KC brand has opened several small coffee shops in the city. The River Market is one of the most unique places to eat (or, in this case, drink!) in Kansas City even though it’s located in a renovated parking lot. Grab a cup of coffee and a plate and find a spot on the trolley tray. Or, take it for a walk and wander the River Market.
We fell in love with Messenger Coffee Company and think it’s one of the most unique places to eat in Kansas City. This multi-story space offers great coffee and pastries, made right there in front of customers! We loved the openness, and thought the staircase was very comfortable. They have an upstairs area with an outdoor fireplace!
Seeing (and smelling) the coffee being roasted added to the experience. There is also a place where you can see how bread and pastries are made. Your table is empty! If you want a quiet place to read, however, you can go to the penthouse level which has additional seating.

Announced as a “Midwestern bistro”, Fox and Pearl was named one of Esquire’s “Best New Restaurants in America” in 2020 and is a finalist for the James Beard Foundation Awards. The menu can be described as “country-chic” with dishes like sausage hand pie, smoked chicken, and strip steak.
This is not a budget restaurant by any means but it is a perfect place for a nice dinner – even at night. And the place itself is cozy, in a renovated building dating back to 1907. This is for foodies to add to their list!
At Cafe Gratitude, “100% Organic, 100% Plant-Based, 100% Love”. Menu items are given credentials like names, which you’ll hear coming back to you when you order. For example, order “I Am Enough” (aka hummus toast) and you will hear “You are enough” in return.
As you might have guessed, everything at Cafe Gratitude is vegetarian and vegan, with a focus on healthy food that encourages you to “open your heart”.
