You’ll find a number of provincial parks along the shores of Lake Erie. While Turkey Point and Long Point are certainly the most popular in this area, Rondeau Provincial Park is a lesser-known gem that shouldn’t be overlooked. This intimate park is a great spot for camping, biking, and hiking, if any or all of it, just south of Washington DC, on the East Coast, Virginia is full of great adventures for solo female travelers . Morgantown, West Virginia: Outdoors In The City

Personally, I think October is hands down the best time to visit Virginia. You can see beautiful fall foliage in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the weather is most comfortable with mild to warm temperatures and less rain than spring. It’s the perfect time to enjoy a hike in Shenandoah National Park or tour the vineyards for a tasting. If you have the budget for a hot air balloon ride, go for it! You will have great views and autumn is the best time for hot air ballooning. Apple picking is very popular in many parts of the state, and there is an abundance of local produce that is picked for farm-to-table food.

Summer is one of the most popular times to visit Virginia, especially if you’re hitting the beaches on the Eastern Shore. If seeing Chincoteague’s wild ponies is at the top of your bucket list, plan your visit for July, when saltwater cowboys round up the ponies and swim them down the island’s canal for auction. Summers in Virginia can be very hot and humid, so pack plenty of sunscreen and the coolest clothes you have.

Late March and early April is a great time to visit Northern Virginia so you have easy access to Washington DC for the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Temperatures can be hot or cold, so layers and a good raincoat are essential.

If you want the lowest prices and fewer crowds, the best time to visit Virginia is the off-season from December to February. Alexandria in northern Virginia has beautiful Christmas decorations, and skiers and snowboarders can book stays at Massanutten or Wintergreen Resort. Winters in Virginia are fairly mild and you are more likely to see icy conditions than snow.

From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the beaches of the Eastern Shore, my home state of Virginia is filled with natural beauty and outdoor recreation. The Eight Caverns on a Road Trip… are stunning attractions found in the Southwest and Shenandoah Valley regions. Underground temperatures are around 56 degrees, so they are even a great place to escape the summer heat and maybe even warm up on a cold winter day. Visit a cavern for a unique and memorable experience for the whole family!

Luray — The Luray Caverns are the largest caverns in the eastern United States and a national landmark. Some of the most spectacular creations were formed just one trickle at a time, such as the Giant’s Hall, vast, expansive chambers decorated by predominantly golden columns, 10 stories high. The golden colors come from the iron and clay soils that seep from the soil along with calcium carbonate “drips”.
