As you might expect from one of the world’s greatest cities, Chicago is home to architectural wonders, an award-winning dining scene, innovative museums, and stunning lakeside scenery. Since moving here more than 20 years ago, I am constantly impressed by the city’s rich cultural offerings.

The Midwest’s largest city has also grown to include many compelling hotels, from intimate boutiques to world-renowned opulence. There is an enormous selection of accommodations for business travelers, luxury seekers, families, and tourists of all kinds.

Pared-down rooms feel utilitarian yet modern, and some come with their own turntables or guitars. Trip Advisor Book Ace Hotel Chicago

Pros: Ace Chicago is surrounded by some of the best restaurants in the city, from James Beard and Michelin award-winning chefs to the winner of the TV show, Top Chef.

Cons: If you prefer a super plush and luxurious vibe, the Ace’s utilitarian feel can’t cut it.

Best Hotels In Chicago. Hotels From $70/night

Minimal, yet modern and edgy, Ace Hotel Chicago speaks to hip business travelers and locals looking for a cool West Loop base.

The West Loop is one of Chicago’s trendiest neighborhoods, and the entire hotel seems to channel that feeling. The rooms are deliberately utilitarian (a hallmark Ace brand aesthetic) but still very comfortable, and some even come with their own turntables or guitars. Long after my stay, I still think about the heart-stealing view from my east-facing room and rooftop.

Pros: The on-site Commons Club is a cool hybrid bar, lounge, and co-working space that feels nothing like a hotel. The rooftop lounge offers panoramic views of the horizon, which feels like an added bonus.

Cons: the hotel can be noisy. It’s next to the El trains and you can hear the trains going by, and the music blasting from the rooftop bar tends to filter down to the rooms on the second floor.

Spend A Weekend In Downtown Chicago| Choose Chicago

Created by Sir Richard Branson, the first Virgin hotel opened in Chicago in 2015 inside the Old Dearborn Bank Building. Steps away from Michigan Avenue in Chicago’s Loop, the downtown boutique hotel offers a refreshed approach to modern luxury and comfort, catering to younger business types and tech-savvy travelers. An app is used to request room service (which is actually handled through delivery services like Door Dash), and it also serves as your TV remote control.

Each room (called rooms) in the 26-story hotel is divided into two areas, with a large dressing area, closet space, and shower separated by a set of private sliding doors from the sleeping area. The vibe is cool and no-nonsense. I like the fact that Virgin has no hidden fees and offers “street level” pricing on minibar items and video on demand, without the typical charges found in similarly high-end hotels.

The terrace is one of the largest in the city. Loews Chicago Book the Loews Chicago Hotel

Pros: Everything looks and feels new with rooms and public spaces that are clean, modern, and spacious. The hotel is only steps from the Chicago Riverwalk.

Hotels In Chicago From $24

Cons: If you like to walk right out the door and find lots of restaurants and shops, the hotel can feel a little off the beaten path as it’s a couple of blocks from Michigan Avenue.

The Loews Chicago Hotel is housed in a 52-story glass and steel tower, and is favored by business travelers who eschew stuffy or traditional hotels for one like this one that favors a clean, sleek approach. Unlike many of Chicago’s hotels housed in rehabilitated historic buildings, I like the new Loews. The spacious public spaces feel contemporary, and the rooms, while good-sized, still seem airy.

I also like the enormous roof terrace (one of the largest in the city) and the 24-hour state-of-the-art fitness center and large indoor pool. Located one block from the Chicago River, the hotel is about a five-minute walk from Michigan Avenue.

Chicago Hotels With Stunning Views

Onsite Amenities: Excellent onsite food and beverage including a large rooftop restaurant, lobby bar, speakeasy lounge, and a Shake Shack; billiard room, golf swing suite

Pros: The vintage Gothic-inspired design is full of historic charm and character. The location opposite Millennium Park also means beautiful views of the park and the lake.

Cons: Downtown location and setting inside a historic building means rooms may be smaller than expected. Also, the popularity of the on-site restaurants (especially Cindy’s Rooftop) can result in unacceptable wait times.

Originally home to an elite men’s club, the Chicago Athletic Association hotel building is an architectural jewel dating back to 1893. Converted into a boutique hotel in 2015, the group still gives me goosebumps with its Harvard meets Hogwarts aesthetic.

Omni Chicago Hotel

The rooms play on the vibe, but it’s comfortable rather than kitschy. I often take out-of-towners up to Cindy’s Rooftop, an airy restaurant with a large outdoor terrace that offers some of the city’s best views of Millennium Park and Lake Michigan.

The third bar is among the best in the city, with 360 panoramic views and three levels. Trip Advisor Book LondonHouse Chicago

Pros: You can get a very posh stay for around $100 a night in the low season. You can’t beat the location, amenities like a fitness center and full spa, and the most impressive views from the rooftop bar.

Cons: Due to its popularity with locals, the three can get absurdly busy in the summer with long waits. If you are booking only for this feature, be patient with access.

The 12 Best Hotels In Chicago (updated August 2021)

After staying at the LondonHouse Chicago, I consider it one of my favorite hotels in the city. The hotel is located just steps from the corner of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive in a landmark Chicago building, formerly the London Guarantee and Accident Building.

Many of the newer rooms at this Hilton Curio Collection property overlook the Chicago River and I highly recommend my Vista Suite for the riverfront views and comfortable accommodations. Even if the real scene-stealer is the rooftop bar, undoubtedly the best in the city with 360 panoramic views and three levels, at the top with a columned dome – expect to witness marriage proposals every day in the summer.

The sleek design combines with signature Kimpton perks like happy hour and pet-friendly amenities. Trip Advisor Book Kimpton Gray Hotel

Pros: The location is perfect for business travelers and those who need to be in the heart of the Loop and financial district. Fitness enthusiasts will love that all rooms come with a yoga mat, bicycles are free to use, and the on-site fitness center is tricked out with all the latest equipment including a Peloton bike.

Downtown Chicago Vacation Rentals & Homes

Cons: If you stay on the weekend, it can feel a bit deserted in the Loop, which welcomes the work week crowds. Many nearby restaurants will be closed.

Parked among the skyscrapers of the Loop, the Kimpton Gray Hotel is ideal for downtown business travelers but it’s a far cry from the bland business hotels you might expect. Formally known as the New York Life Insurance building, the landmark building dates back to 1894. The hotel takes its name from the preserved Georgia Gray marble, which is found in many of the restored interiors.

The IHG property beautifully combines these historic features with contemporary-style guest rooms with crisp furnishings. Upgrade to the King Spa room for a shower and separate soaking tub, which is very nice after a long day at work.

We love the social vibe of the free evening wine hour in the lobby, an IHG feature. Go upstairs to the living room Argentinian roof with a large retractable roof. It’s a great after-work spot for entertaining customers.

Inside The Swanky Virgin Hotel Now Open In Downtown Chicago

Open showers are not for the modest, but do not worry, there is a privacy curtain. Tripadvisor Book the EMC2 Hotel

Pros: The unexpected decorations and fun robots are a treat for kids (and kids at heart). In addition, it is a short walking distance to the famous Magnificent Mile, the Theater District, and a bounty of shops and restaurants.

Disadvantages: Some will find the glass-enclosed shower in the middle of the room cool, while others
