Earlier this week, World Footprints attended the grand opening of Hotel RL Inner Harbor Baltimore, Red Lion Hotel Corporation’s (RLHC) new urban lifestyle brand. Guests enjoyed signature cocktails, live music and an overnight stay at the flagship hotel, which allowed staff to finalize the final details before the hotel officially opens its doors on Saturday.

RHLC President and CEO Greg Mount also used the opening to launch Wake Up Call, a social responsibility initiative to raise awareness and fight the homelessness epidemic. In addition, Hotel RL has shown its commitment to the community.

Housed in the former historic Keyser Building, the 130-room Hotel RL is a shining example of adaptive reuse, creativity and preservation. Located in the financial district and just a few blocks from the famous Inner Harbor, the lobby of the RL Hotel reflects a cross between an arts community and a high-tech incubator. Common areas and advanced technologies are emphasized throughout the building. In the entrance hall, chalkboard-painted columns are exposed; block-like “steps” that serve as venues for the innovative Living Stage – a venue that will showcase local musicians, thought leaders and innovators (and possibly a future World Footprints live broadcast); a well-stocked bar and a pleasant cafe.

The RL Baltimore Inner Harbor Hotel offers a youthful yet luxurious atmosphere. The hotel management held a casting call for employees and selected those who are engaging, professional and creative. Most of the staff showed off blue, pink and green hair, piercings and tattoos. Being there was sometimes as close as being on the theater stage. It was fun and we look forward to returning soon.

Overall, our impression of the Hotel RL Baltimore Inner Harbor is positive, but don’t take it for granted. Hotel RL is offering a one-night trial stay from August 1 to October 31, 2015. For $100, you can experience Hotel RL Baltimore Inner Harbor for yourself. Flying into BWI? Hotel RL has a great VW Bug van that has been restored and modified to shuttle between the hotel and the airport.

Because World Footprints prides itself on integrity and transparency, please know that our sponsored evening at the RL Hotel did not influence our review. We were really impressed with the stylish and artistic atmosphere and decor. In addition, we appreciate RLHC’s philanthropic commitment and support of the communities where the Hotel RL brand enters. However, our pre-opening experience was not perfect. Sometimes only one elevator worked and our room was missing little things like an ice bucket and a coffee maker. Nevertheless, we saw the full potential of this property and felt the heart of the community, so we look forward to our return visit soon.
