San Diego Zoo Hotels – When it comes to lodging, many people I talk to about San Diego travel plans ask for hotels near the San Diego Zoo. This makes sense because it is our main attraction and the main reason people visit. It’s a bit difficult to choose a hotel based only on proximity to the zoo.
The first thing to know is that there are no hotels within walking distance of the San Diego Zoo. Expect to walk at least 30 minutes. The good news is that it’s really easy to drive there thanks to the large and free parking lot. Alternatively, you can take Uber or even the Old Town Trolley to the Balboa Park stop.
San Diego Zoo Hotels
The Downtown, North Park, and Hillcrest neighborhoods all surround Balboa Park where the San Diego Zoo is located, which means that this list of hotels near the San Diego Zoo is a bit more diverse than other lists I’ve compiled. My picks here suit different types of travelers, including those who want a hotel closest to the zoo, luxury travelers, families who need large but reasonable suites, boutique hotel lovers, and more. You can also read my list of the best hotels in downtown San Diego, any of which would be perfect for a zoo-centric visit.

The downtown San Diego hotel has seen its ups, downs and ownership changes over the years but has a fascinating history. Fourteen US presidents and countless famous people have stayed there in its 100 years of life. It was also an oratory and a place where women’s rights were won. Now, after a careful restoration to modernize while preserving historic features, US GRANT is better than ever.

Why go: The much-lauded Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown is located in the former 1928 San Diego Trust & Savings Bank, on Broadway at the northern edge of the Gaslamp Quarter (one of the conference rooms is behind the bank vault door).
