If you fly directly to Singapore from the US or Europe, it might seem like you haven’t traveled much at first. On the surface, it is perhaps the most “un-Asian” of all Asian countries. Radio hosts speak English, cab drivers will insist you wear your seatbelt, and prices are as high as back home.

But dig a little below the surface and Singapore will reveal to you its charm, its diversity and its ethnic roots. Although the island city-state of Singapore is quite small, it has many unique neighborhoods. As you walk between the different districts of Singapore, you may feel like you are visiting different countries and cultures.

From the vibrant and colorful Little India to the charming hipster-like Kampong Glam, the sprawling shopping malls along Orchard Road, the impressively posh Marina Bay, the nightlife of the Quays, the beautiful colonial buildings of the Colonial District and the people-entertainment hubs that make up Sentosa Island.

We first visited Singapore in 2002, on our way home from Australia to Norway where we studied, and we instantly fell in love with the city/country. Whenever we’re in Asia, we try to visit Singapore, which means almost every year, and we’ve stayed at different hotels in the city and at different price ranges.

For some time, we have been wanting to write more articles about Singapore, but things can change quickly and we didn’t want to rely solely on past experiences. So we booked a flight and spent a month in Singapore exploring the city like never before.

One of the results is this guide to where to stay in Singapore with all the little hotel gems we found. Here we reveal what we think are the best areas to live in Singapore and why For each area, we’ve listed our favorite hotels at any budget – top-end, mid-range and budget.

You must be warned though that Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in Asia and has been named the world’s most expensive city to live in for the fifth year in a row which is also reflected in hotel prices. That said, we’ll reveal some good value for your money options in this guide so there’s no need to panic. 🙂

This is the only major city we have experienced landing at the airport only to be told that the hotels in the city are fully occupied and there are no rooms available anywhere! Fortunately, this turned out to be a slight exaggeration but there was a huge dentist conference happening and every major hotel was full. We finally managed to find a place to stay, but it cost way more than our budget and since then we always book in advance when we visit Singapore.

In short, you will be here for shopping! Orchard Road is the world’s best upscale shopping destination. Along the wide Orchard Road, huge modern shopping malls line both sides of the road and if you can’t find what you’re looking for here, you probably won’t find it anywhere in the world. From luxury fashion clothing brands to camera stores, Orchard is a shopper’s dream destination.

But there’s more to Orchard than just shopping, venture down the small side streets and you’ll discover plenty of cool bars and restaurants and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Inside the shopping malls are cinema multiplexes and plenty of restaurants, food courts and cafes for those shopping breaks. The food court is a special value for money.

If you are a book lover like us, don’t forget to visit the Kinokunya Book Store branch inside Ngee Ann City Mall. It’s the largest bookstore in the world, and I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit digging there for treasure.

Just north of Orchard Road, you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city at the green-lunged Istana Park, where you’ll also find the presidential residence.

MRT lines connect the area very well, and you are never far from the nearest station making it easy to get to the rest of the city.

Shopping, shopping, and some more shopping as well as eating and drinking are the main activities in the Orchard Road area. It really is a shopping mecca!

It gets busy, especially on weekends and holidays, and with plenty of cinemas, nightlife is otherwise a bit limited.

So by staying at the Four Seasons Hotel, you’ll be within walking distance of all the shopping, cinema, cafes and restaurants in Singapore’s main shopping area. From here you can easily take taxi/grab car and MRT/train so you can easily explore the rest of Singapore. One of the best and most luxurious hotels in Singapore so far.

The luxurious Shangri-La Hotel has a perfect location at the western end of Orchard Road, right in the middle of all the amazing shopping opportunities Singapore has to offer. With its world-class friendly service, this hotel truly makes you feel like a queen or king.

The hotel has an incredible six-hectare tropical garden with a swimming pool, a pond with a small waterfall, lots of orchids and lots of palm trees. There are three different wings to choose from. If you stay in a bungalow villa-style room in the Oasis Garden Wing, it’s like staying at a resort. The Tower Wing has newly renovated rooms each with a unique theme. The American president chose to stay at the Shangri-La during his 2018 summit with the North Korean leader.

Hotel Jane Orchardgateway Oh boy, what an infinity swimming pool this hotel has! Be one of the best in Singapore! It is huge and located on the rooftop with a great view of the Singapore skyline. And it’s open until 23:00, so it’s the perfect place to enjoy a drink or swim under the stars. ♥ It! A lifeguard is on duty poolside, and there are three pools, including a children’s pool.

The location of Jane OrchardGateway Hotel is perfect, inside the Orchard Gateway Mall on Orchard Rd (reception is on the 10th floor), which is also conveniently located by MRT Somerset Station. You’re just an elevator ride down, and you’re in the middle of Orchard Gateway, Orchard Central, and all the restaurants and shops 313 Somerset has to offer.

Just behind the hotel is Killiney Road, lined with cozy and cheap restaurants, delicious Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese and Malaysian everything.

The rooms are large, comfortable and modern, and extremely quiet, we couldn’t hear anything from our neighbors or the cleaning staff in the morning. Fast and free internet. The hotel even has a robot (!), the cute Zeno, that delivers room service meals, etc. 🙂

Lloyd’s Inn We liked Lloyd’s a lot, it was good value for money (with breakfast at the famous Cafe Killini Kopitiam or a nearby bakery). Lloyd’s is a nice, clean, minimalist boutique hotel with a real Zen vibe. All 34 rooms have some element of nature, our room had an outdoor shower which we loved! Some rooms have large windows and even a terrace overlooking a lush green garden.

Some rooms have bathtubs outside! Super cool! A room with a garden view costs an additional SDG 20= US$15.
