Although the island city-state of Singapore is quite small, it has many unique neighborhoods. It can feel like you are visiting several different countries and cultures just by walking between different neighborhoods in Singapore.

We first visited Singapore in 2002 on our way back home from Australia to Norway where we were studying and immediately fell in love with the city/country. We try to visit Singapore every time we’re in Asia, which means almost every year, and we’ve stayed at many different hotels around the city and at different price ranges.

We’ve been wanting to write more articles about Singapore for a while, but things can change quickly and we didn’t want to just rely on past experiences. So we booked a flight and spent a month in Singapore exploring the city like never before.

One result is this guide to where to stay in Singapore with all the little hotel gems we could find. Here we reveal what we think are the best areas to stay in Singapore and why. For each area, we’ve listed our favorite hotels at any budget: top, mid-range, and budget.

Whether you’re looking for that once-in-a-lifetime luxury hotel, a small intimate boutique hotel, a budget-friendly mid-range hotel, or a budget guesthouse, Singapore has a comprehensive collection of them all.

Be warned, however, that Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in Asia and has been named the most expensive city in the world for the fifth consecutive year, which is also reflected in hotel prices. So in this guide, we’ll uncover some good value for your money options, so there’s no need to panic. 🙂

It’s also the only major city where we’ve landed at the airport only to find the city’s hotels fully booked and no rooms available anywhere. To sum it up in one word, you will stay here to shop. Orchard Road is home to arguably the world’s best luxury shopping. Along the wide Orchard Road, huge modern malls line both sides of the street, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for here, chances are you won’t find it anywhere else in the world. From luxury fashion apparel brands to camera stores, Orchard is a shopper’s dream destination.

But there’s more to Orchard than just shopping, wander into the little side streets and you’ll discover plenty of cool bars and restaurants and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Inside the malls are cinema multiplexes and plenty of restaurants, food courts and cafes for that shopping break. Food courts are particularly good value for money.

If you’re a book lover like us, don’t miss a visit to the Kinokuniya bookstore branch at Ngee Ann City Mall. It’s the greatest bookstore in the world, and I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit digging for treasures there.

Just north of Orchard Road, you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city at the green lung Istana Park, where you’ll also find the Presidential Residence.

The MRT lines connect the area very well and you’re never far from the nearest station, making it easy to get around the rest of the city from here.

Shopping, shopping and some more shopping as well as eating are the main things to do in the Orchard Road area. It really is a shopping mecca.

It gets really busy, especially on weekends and holidays, and while there are plenty of movie theaters, the nightlife is a bit limited.

Hotel prices are higher here. There aren’t that many hostels and cheap hotels in Orchard Road for budget travelers.

It is located right in the middle of everything on Orchard Road. So when you stay at the Four Seasons Hotel, you’ll be a short walk to all the shopping, cinemas, cafes and restaurants in Singapore’s main shopping district. From here you have easy access to taxi/cars and MRT/trains so you can easily get around the rest of Singapore. One of the best and most luxurious hotels in Singapore so far.

The luxurious Shangri-La Hotel is perfectly located at the western end of Orchard Road, right in the middle of the amazing shopping opportunities that Singapore has to offer. With world-class friendly service, this hotel truly makes you feel like a queen or king.

The hotel has an incredible six hectares of tropical gardens with a swimming pool, a pond with a small waterfall, an abundance of orchids and lots of palm trees. There are three different wings to choose from. When you stay in one of the bungalow villa-style oasis Garden Wing rooms, it’s like staying at a resort. The Tower Wing has newly renovated rooms, each with a unique theme. The American president chose to stay at the Shangri-La with the leader of North Korea in 2018.

Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Oh boy, what an infinity pool this hotel has. Must be one of the best in Singapore. It is huge and located on the rooftop with a great view of the Singapore skyline. And it’s open until 11pm, so it’s the perfect place to enjoy a drink or swim under the stars. ♥ it! There is a lifeguard on duty at the pool, and there are three pools, including a children’s pool.

The location of Hotel Jen Orchardgateway is perfect, inside the Orchard Gateway Mall on Orchard Rd (reception is on the 10th floor), with MRT Somerset Station also conveniently located. You can just take the elevator down and you are in the center of all the restaurants and shops that Orchard Gateway, Orchard Central and 313 Somerset have to offer.

Just behind the hotel is Killiney Road, which is lined with cozy and cheap restaurants, everything from delicious Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese and Malaysian.

The rooms are large, comfortable and modern, and extremely quiet, we didn’t hear anything from our neighbors or the cleaners in the morning. Fast and free internet. And the hotel even has a robot (!), a cute Geno that serves room service food, and more. 🙂

Lloyd’s Inn We really liked Lloyd’s, it was good value for money (including breakfast at the popular Killiney Kopitiam cafe or nearby bakery). Lloyd’s is a great, clean, minimalist boutique hotel with a real zen vibe. All 34 rooms have some element of nature, our room had an outdoor shower which we loved. Some rooms have large windows and even a balcony overlooking the green and lush garden.

Some rooms even have an outdoor bathroom. Super cool! It is worth paying extra SDG 20 = USD 15 for a room with a garden view.
