Although there are places to stay in Deadwood, South Dakota, we stayed at Rushmore Shadows near Mount Rushmore. We took a trip for a few days. I wrote down everything we wanted to see and we were able to hit a lot of places. Deadwood was one of them. Coming to different locations will be Sturgis, Full Throttle Saloon, and Rapid City, SD.

It’s nothing like Bridal Veil Falls in Niagara Falls, however, it was on our list and it was on the way so we stopped to check it out.

We were very happy with Wild Bill Bar. It really is something out of the Old West. There you can tour the room where Wild Bill Hickok was shot and killed.

It was in Deadwood that Wild Bill Hickok was killed, and Seth Bullock served as town marshal.

After a few years though the gold rush was dying and heavy mining was needed to get the gold out of the ground. This, along with a devastating fire, saw the town rebuild as a residential, legal and prosperous place.

Today Deadwood thrives on its links to the past, and two million visitors make their way to Deadwood each year. The city is included in the National Historic District, and as such is a common place to see people dressed in Wild West costumes walking the streets. The city likes to play the traditional image of border settlement, but visitors should not have complaints, after all the reason why they are there. It’s an image where shops, restaurants, hotels and casinos play up to, and it’s easy enough to imagine yourself going back to the days of the Earp brothers and others. Tourists should take the time to visit the “Night Star”, the casino of Kevin Costner, and it holds the famous film Silverado of the actor.

As previously mentioned, the population has declined since its peak in the 1870s and 1880s when it reached over five thousand, and today there are only fourteen hundred people standing. It’s population fluctuates even though the summer sees thousands of visitors stay in Deadwood, making it a base for trips to the South Dakota backcountry, as well as using the backcountry trails for biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Another popular summer pastime is fishing.

There is a lot to see and do in Deadwood and there is a lot of history. Who knew it was called “Badlands” but had nothing to do with Badlands National Park.
